CRICKET.

SENIOR CUP. The Senior Cup match between the Star and Phoenix first elevens was commenced on Saturday afternoon. The Star captain (Nicholls) won the toss, and elected to bit. None of the batmen, with the exception of C. Mansill, were able to make any stand against the bowling of Frith, who was dead on the wicket, and the innings closed for the poor total of 51. The Phoenix made a much better show with the bat, th 6 innings realising 134 runs. Taylor played a fine innings of 33, and Ogier with 28, Moorhouse 15, and Webb 13 also played well. The Stars, who were in a minority of S 3 runs, went in for their second innings, and scored 25 runs for the loss of one wicket. The fielding of the Phoenix was very smart. JUNIOR CUP. Thjp Albert first and Btar second elevens began their heat for the Junior Cup on Saturday, and so far the former have very much the best of the game. The Stare, who batted first, were all dismissed for 53, Remington (10) and Chisholm (16) getting into double figures. Hansen and Drummond divided the wickets between them. The Alberts replied with 88, Hutchings contributing 16, Nicholson 14, aod Johnson 11. Bull trundled best for the Stars. In their second innings the Stars, batting one man short, were disposed of for 62 runs. Remington 14, Ghisholm 13, Little 15, and Paul 11. Drummond again bowled well, securing eight wicketß for 19 runs. The Alberts will go in for their second innings on Saturday next. THIRD-CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP. The Wellington and Rival Club third elevens started their heat for the third-class championship on the Wellington College ground on Saturday. The Wellingtons made 49 in their first innings, Morgan with 13 being the only double scorer. The Rivals responded with 102, toward which Davis contributed 34, Clater 25, and Port 14. Fisher and Lash bowled best for the Rivals, and Luckie and Bethuno for the Welling, tons. The Phcenix and Midland third elevens played their heat on Saturday at Newtown, the former sustaining defeat by an innings and five runs. The scores were Midland 50 (batting two men short), Danlts 15 and Belworthy 12 (not out) ; Phcenix 29 (Pcrham 12), and 16. The Phcenix batted 4 men short in the first innings, and 3 in the second. Danks bowled well for the winners, securing six wickets

for 8 runs in the second innings. Arden and Hadfield bowled beat on the losers’ side. OTHER MATCHES. A one-innings match between the Phcenix second eleven and a mixed Rival team was played on the Basin Reserve on Saturday, the former winning by 23 runs. The scores were—Phcenix, 9i (Douglas, 20 ; Creeks, 31 ; Hemery, 17) ; Rivals, 71 (Binus. 13, not out ; ilouldsworth, 12 ; Barlow and Ramsay, 11 each). C-eeks and Knell for the winners, and Mnrryatt and Skinner for the lowers, were tho most successful bowler ’. A match -was played at Newtown Park on Saturday between teams representing John Dutine and Co. (Limited) and Joseph Nathan and Co., 12 a-sicle, resulting in a win for the former by nine wickets and 27 runs. Scores Nathan, 39 and 43 ; Duthie, 49 and GO for two wickets. In the first innings none of the batsmen on either side succeeded in getting into double figures ; in the second Hawke, 18, was the principal rcorer for Nathan and Co., while John Duthie, jon., played a capital innings of 34 (not put) for the winners, and was ably backed up by McFarlane 13 (not out). Ogilvie and G. L. Cole trundled best for the losers, and Dixon secured an excellent average for Duthie anrl Co.
