ERADICATION OF SCAB.
We are informed, that the reply of the New Zealand Government to the representations of Victoria in
connection with the existence of scab in this Colony Avas not made quite in the terms indicated in a cable message published this week. The Stock Conference having passed resolutions conveying an insinuation that adequate steps Avere not being taken in New Zealand for the eradication of scab, the Government replied to Victoria, stating that every effort was being made to clean New Zealand flocks. Beyond this disclaimer no reference Avas made to the propriety or impropriety of the Stock Conference passing resolutions condemnatory or otherwise. It will be satisfactory to stockowners, and people interested in the produce of the Colony generally, to learn that New' Zealand is iioav free from scab, and that in all probability the whole Colony Avill have a clean certificate a few weeks hence. That, of course, will not at once give us the entree to Australian ports, because there must of necessity be a certain period of probation ; but it is a great step forw'ard in that direction, and one that proves the efficacy of the Department’s efforts to cope with a serious drawback.
