CHESS TOURNAMENT.

(PER press association.) Dunedin, January 6. The interprovmoial chess tournament was commenced this evening with five competitors. Smith (Christchurch! was pitted against Dr Steinhouse (Dunedin), Barnes (Wellington) against Hookham (Christchurch), Siedeberg (Dunedin) having a bye. Smith adopted the Sicilian defeuce against the doctor, but made a weak move in the 13th, of which the doctor took advantage. Play was continued till the46fch move, when Smith resigned. Barnes adopted the Petroff defence against Ilookham. Play was continued to the 30th move, apparently without much advantage to either. Eaoh player has to play each competitor one game. January 7. The game between Hookham and Barnes was abandoned aB a draw. At the sixteenth move the latter wa? left with a. bishop and three pawns against his opponent’s bishop and two pawns, but the superiority was not sufficient to force a win. Later. The chess tournament was continued tonight. Smith (Christchurch) played tbeScotch gambit in a match wifcb Siedeberg (Dunedin). The latter had the best of the play after the seventh move, and eventually the Christchurch player resigned. Dr Stenhonse met Barnes, the latter adopting the French defence. The doctor got into difficulties, and resigned about the twenty-fifth move. Hookham and Siedeberg met, the latter adopting the Ruy-Lopez game. At the fourteenth move the Dunedin player allowed his adversary by an oversight to take one of his knights. The game ended in Hookham’s favour. January 9. The chess tournament was continued tonight, Dr Steahouse meeting Mr Hookham. The latter, who has moved, adopted tbe Ruy Lopez attack at the 28th move, and the doofcor was able to take his opponent’s knight. Hookham started his move at II o’clock, his time being 2 hours, and that of the doctor 1 hour 10 minutes.
