THE PROPOSED MUSICAL FESTIVAL.

TO THE EDITO R OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAII. Sir,—l read your leader of last week on this subject with much pleasure. I. paid my guinea call for the deficit on last Festival without considering myself victimised in any way, and I am quite ready to do the same again in case of need. The Festival was, in my opinion, worth all it cost, though some people (who seem to grudge no expense for football teams, regattas, and the like) object to give anything for the intellectual and artistic advancement which we need more than anything else in our colonial life. I am not in any way speaking against the craze for athletics, but simply affirming that the far-reaching effects of such a festival as we had last year were of appreciable value to the community and the Colony, and a credit to the city in which it was held. I sincerely trust that the proposal to hold another festival in our jubilee year will be successfully realised. As one who had no concern whatever in the organisation of the Festival of 1888, I do not know how far your strictures on its business management are justified, but I think great allowances should be made in consideration of the novelty and boldness of the experiment.—l am, etc., Guarantor.
