TAILORESSES' UNION.

Dunedin, August 28. It is believed that the strike of the tailoresses is averted by a Committee of the Union and representatives from manufacturers, and the following in effect is the official record :—Mr G. Fenwick was unanimously elected to the chair. After the opening remarks of the Chairman, the secretary of the Union explained the purposes for which the meeting had been called, and stated that before going into business he -would like to ask the manufacturers if they recognised the Tailoresses’ Union as at present constituted. In reply to the chairman, Mr Hallenstein, on behalf of the manufacturers, stated they did subject to the appointment of a joint committee, to whom had been submitted all the points in dispute between the manufacturers and the Union ; and further, that part of the basis of the constitution of the joint committee shall be the primary right to determine the log to be in force, and such other leading principles as may be mutually agreed upon betwen the manufacturers and the Union. After considerable discussion there was a unanimous opinion that a joint committee should be formed to settle the matters of dispute which may from time to time arise, the decision of such joint committee to be binding on both sides. Mr Hallenstein wished to know if the rules were hard and fast or not, as if the Committee were going to alter them at any time the manufacturers should be consulted about such alterations if they affected them, and, if necessary, that they should be referred to the ijoint committee. It was resolved that the joint committee ehould be appointed in the following manner ; —The Tailoresses’ Union to appoint two (2) members ; the manufacturers to appoint two (2) members ; and these four (4) members to elect two (2) additional members, quite unconnected with the managers or Union ; and these two outside members to appoint a third member, one of these three last mentioned members to be chairman ; in the event of any voting, the Chairman to have a casting vote. The above minutes were passed unanimously as a correct record of the outcome of the deliberation at the meeting. Later. At a meeting to-night between the manufacturers and the Tailoresses’ Union, two representatives from each were appointed a committee, and two others entirely unconnected with the trade are to be selected. It was decided that this committee shouid meet on Saturday to consider the log. August 29. An agreement come to between the Tailoresses’ Union and the manufacturers was submitted to a meeting yesterday. The latter will recognise a United Board, which is'being appointed to settle future disputes. August 31. The agitation in connection with the Tailoresses’ Union, and the prospect of a -strike, appear to have unsettled the girls. In one factory eight of the hands had not joined the Union, and a demonstration against them was made by the others. The eight girls were smuggled out of the way on leaving the works on Wednesday, but when they appeared the next morning the others evinced so much disinclination to work with them that they were all given a holiday till Monday, to allow of affairs settling down. The hands in another large factory were also given a holiday on the same day. Yesterday the hands of two other factories were so unsettled that it was deemed advisable to give them a holiday, and in the morning bands of work girls were betaking themselves to various places to hold picnics. The two outsiders apnointed to the committee, who meet to-day to consider the log, are Messrs Donald Reid and W. Hutchison. Dunedin, September 4. At a meeting of the Tailoresses’ Union, the compromise of the log arranged by the ■Committee was approved. The Joint Committee have now nearly completed the giressers’ log.
