The movement in that city threatens to spread. The London Dock Companies have declined the shipowners’ proposals, and suggest that a joint committee of the two interests should be appointed to consider the whole situation. This has been agreed to, and the Committee meets to-day. Fresh labourers are arriving at the docks daily, notwithstanding the fact that the strikers have a picket of 4000 strong. The Directors of the Dock Companies have finally refused to act jointly with the shipowners until after the strike is ended. The shipowners have formed a committee to confer with the Dock Companies as soon as the latter are disposed to discuss matters. The Dock Companies believe they will win in the end. Mr Burns threatens to incite the labourers at Southampton to join the London strikers. At Liverpool the excitement is increasing, but up to i the present time ouly the corn and i flour carriers have gone out- They l demand an increase of wages to 6s per day. j the generosity of Melbourne sympathisers. Ten thousand ' tailors, cabinetmakers, and cigar-makers have joined the strikers. London, September 4. Work at the wharfs is gradually being resumed. Mr Burns states that, the strike will extend to Glasgow within 48 hours. The soldiers and police who were ordered to proceed to the Docks to suppress any intimidation on the part of the- strikers were cheered by the latter on their arrival. Several London firms who are executing colonial orders under contract, have sent consignments of rolling stock and paper machinery for shipment at Liverpool, but in consequence of the threatened strike they have transferred the shipment to Glasgow. One hundred thousand shilling relief tickets were issued yesterday, and these were only sufficient to palliate the Ruffering. The strikers express their willingness to abate their original demands with regard to the shipowners and wharfingers, owing to the kindness received-at their hands, but are determined not to forego one jot to the Dock Companies. The Strikers’ Central Committee are expected to issue to-day conditions on which the men may return to work.

SPECIAL . London, September 3. Mr Burns repudiates the allegation of inciting strikers to violence. The receipts now average L2OOO per day. The relief is limited to food, except in the case of men on picket duty. The departure of the Tainui has been delayed three days. The Doric is at Plymouth awaiting orders. The Dumber of strikers is increasing. An advance in wages has been granted to postal carmen, gas stokers, machinists, and other trades to an extent equal on the whole to L 200.000 a year. The riverside men on strike, who number 100,000, are dependent on the dona-dons of others for support, but the remainder of the strikers belong to separate unions, which are self-supporting. The dockmen have now formed a union, which 14,000 men have already joined. The directors of the Dock Companies refuse, however, to negotiate with Mr Tillett, Chairman of the Union, o.n the ground of his insultjng behaviour. Sir Donald Currie, representing a deputation of shipowners, requested the Dock Companies to permit the former to arrange with the dock labourers to load the docks pending the settlement of the dispute.
