BRUNNER MINE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Slit, Sir James Hector’s evidence on the above mine, published in the Times of Saturday last, if true, is sufficient to cause alarm in the minds of the hundreds of people resident in the district, as well as in the proprietors and engineers of the -mine Sir, does it not appear peculiar that Sir James Hector, having made a similar statement over 14 years ago, has never visited that mine or district since that date ? If he had done so within the last few years he would discover that the “shored up ship ” which he likens it to is firmly embedded in the pavement, over 50 per cent ef the shorts having been drawn and the roof settled in acres in extent at various points. Assuming the existence of any Avell-grounded apprehension as expressed by Sir James Hector, the interests'at stake are so important that I trust the Government will appoint a commission of experts to report on it. Meantime I can state, on the authority of the official Mines Inspector and the ' Mine Engineer, made to me se\ r eral years past, that there is not a’ particle of danger of any slip occurring in the direction indicated by Sir Jalhes. —lam, &c., j - : - ,u ‘ • M. Kennedy.
