SPORTING.

BACI2SIG. (By Martini.) Manton is reported doing very well in Sydney, but the Referee does not think him nearly as good as Carbine. Lady Walmsley, Mr Allan McLean’s mare, full sister to Carbine, has been sold to the new Brisbane company for 400 guineas. Two Dunedin ‘ books ’ were posted by a confrere at Dunedin last week over bets made when Lochiel won the New Zealand Cup in 18S7. It iB stated that the poster was willing to give a clean receipt if he got 10 per cent of the money. With reference to New Zealand Cup horses * Rata ’ says : —‘ I believe that it is not definitely decided whether Chainshot and Merrie England wili remain here or go over to Australia. The Dunedin Exhibition meeting will be a great attraction this season, and no doubt it will conduce to a retention of some of the best horses in the colony that would otherwise be raced elsewhere in the spring. Both Chainshot and Merrie Eugland are in splendid health, and quite forward enough for the season j indeed, both have been kept in active work throughout the winter, Dudu is also looking well, and Sultan never looked better, and in Catamount Mr Hammond has another excellent colt. Billy White has both Sultan and Catamount in good fettle. R. Ray’s pair, Son-of-a-Gun and Wakatipu, are progressing very favourably, and Springston never went better than he is going now, while British Lion and Vandal look uncommonly well, and go well in their work. I ssw Dunkeld do a fast gallop last week, and he is a good horse, and in a similar spin lately Lorraine moved grandly, and he appeared to look, and go better than he did even at this time last year. Engagement does not look particularly well, aud neither does Alsace; but Helmsman was never better, though in point of quality he is a long remove from Dunkeld in my opinion.’ Repose is likely.to be tried over hurdles. Nelson’s first foal made his appearance at Sylvia Park the other day, the dam being Florence. It is said that Major George had a tempting offer to send Nelson to Australia for a season’s stud work, which he declined, and the horse is to serve 12 mares for 25 guineas each at Auckland. Billingsgate is to do stud duty in the Waikato this season. Leolinus and Hotchkiss will also be located in that district. The stallion Ingomar has been in the hands of the New Zealand Stud Company for so long a time that it was no doubt generally understood that they were his owners ; but until last week it turns out that Mr P. Campbell, of Christchurch, who imported the son of Uncas from England, held a half (interest in him. Major George, the now managing director of the company, has been straightening matters up all round at Sylvia ■ Park since he assumed the reins of power, and as he came to the conclusion that it would be to the interests of the company to have the whole interest or none in Ingonaar, Mr Campbell was asked to name a price at which he would either buy or sell at. This he did, and the figure being satisfactory, Major George closed the negotiations by purchasing Mr Campbell’s interest on behalf of the Stud Company. I have not been able to ascertain wffat price Mr Campbell put upon his half interest, but it would not, ; I think, be less than 000 guineas. Wellington - Racing Club. —The annual meeting of members of the Wellington Racing Club was held at the Club Hotel on Friday, Mr J. S. M. Thompson presiding. The Chairman explained that it was proposed to adjourn the meeting until a future date, as the Stewards were arranging several matters with regard to building a new grandstand, and they would be prepared to lay further information before the adjourned meeting. At his suggestion the meeting wan adjourned for a fortnight. •By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. GREAT EBOR HANDICAP. (per. PRESS ASSOCIATION.) London, August 28.
