False Alarm. —The firebells in the city gave a vigorous alarm of . fire shortly before 12 o’clock Friday night. The Brigade quickly turned out, but their services were not required, as the supposed fire was nothing else than the smoke issuing from Mr Smith’s fish-curing establishment at the rear of the Opera House. Masonic. —A well attended meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the Masonio Union was held in the Parliamentary BuPdings last Friday, when it was unanimously resolved that the convention of delegates of lodges for the establishment of the United Grand Lodge should be held in Wellington on Wednesday, September 11th. It was announced that a majority of the lodges of each of the three constitutions in the Colonyhad now decided in favour of the Grand Lodge movement. It had beep from the first determined that the convention should be held during the present session of Parliament, and the 11th of next month was felt to be the last certain date on which it could be depended that Parliament would be sitting. It was also felt that no such representative gathering of members of the craft could be held in any centre as could now assemble in Wellington, a large number of members of Parliament having already been appointed to represent lodges at the convention. It is expected that about 150 representatives of the various lodges will be present.
