EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Education was held at the Board’s office on Wednesday. There were present Messrs J. R. Blair, J. Young, A. W. Brown, F. H. Fraser, H. Bunny and Rev J. Paterson. The Chairman reported that the balance at the bank was L 4352 11s.

The paysheet amounted t0L2127 Bs. A return was laid on the table showing that there were 24 teachers in the service of the Board who had obtained full certificates, and 7 who did liot hold certificates. It was decided that the return should be referred to a committee, consisting of the Chairman and Messrs Brown and Fraser, for their consideration, and that they should present a report at next meeting. A number of reports from the Inspector were laid on the table. The reports were generally of a satisfactory nature. Mr A. Cook applied to lease the Board’s reserve at-. Karori. Granted, on the understanding that the site would be given up at once if the Board required it. An application by Mr C. Main waring for the use of the school site at Berhampore was granted on the same condition. The application of a number of residents at Te Horo tor a new school was referred to the Inspector. The resignation of Miss M. B. Dyer, of Karori, was accepted. Leave of absence for another month was granted to Mr H. Wells, of Tawa Flat, and Miss Helyer, on account of ill-health. Reports were received from the instructors in connection with the pupil-teachers’ examinations, in which it was pointed out that several of the teachers were not attending to their work properly. The Board decided to dismiss those teachers who failed in their examination in consequence of negligence. A suggestion by the Educational Institute that teachers should be paid for the instruction cf pupil teachers, whether the latter passed or not, was considered, but the Board decided not to alter the present regulations. Additional grants of L 5 were made to the Pauabahanui, Parkvale and Porirua Committees, for repairs, etc. A sum of L 9 was granted to the Eketahuna Committee for repairs, and Ll 6 to the Otaki Committee for laying gravel on the playground. It was decicled that tenders should be called for the erection of a school residence at Dalefield. The Inspector was instructed to present a report at next meeting specifying the districts in which he considered it necessary that residences should be erected. >Miss Page was appointed as assistant teacher at the Kilbirnie School. In committee the Board appointed teachers for the Mangatainoko and Mangaone Schools, but the names were not made public, pending the approval of the selection by .the local committees.
