Discoursing on the respective merits o Carbine and Manton, ‘Rata' says:—‘Fit and well, Manton could have walked over SnltaD, Vandal, and Dudu at Dunedin ; of that I am perfectly certain, and fit and well no Carbine would ever have won the Sydney Gold Cup, of tb it I am equally certain. Over and above 8.4 Carbine could never concede Manton 101 b. Carbine is the best horse I have seen raced in the colonies, and bar Ormonde, Isonomy, St. Gatien, and St. SimoD, I have never seen a three-year-old that could lick him, and I now believe that any one of these could. Dndn is reported to be almost herself again.

The owner of Ahua is stated to have asked £4OO for tho horse recently. Last week it was rumoured (says * Spectator’) that Mr Fanfold, who has fot many years filled the poaitiou of secretary to the Canterbury Jockey Club, had had offered to him the appointment of secretary to the Melbourne Club, and report stated that he had decided upon accepting it. Such, I believe, is not the case, but that gentleman contemplates a trip to the Old Country, and will, I understand, obtain six months’ leave of absence. One hundred sovereigns are said to have been refused lately for the ‘hack’ mare Olga. A Southern writer remarks that the more is a half sister to Loch Lomond, but this is not a very great deal in her favour, for Olga is probably smarter now than Loch Lomond ever was. THE CHESTER CUP.
