(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, May 7. The Kapanga Assessment Board of Reviewers sat at Coromandel to day, when the assessment of the Kapanga Gold Mining Company’s property was reduced from £102,000 to £18,500. Mr T. Cotter appeared for the Property Tax Commissioner aud Mr S. Hesketh for the Company, and an able stand was made on both Bides. The owners of the property are an English Company. The bronze medal of the Royal Humane Society has been presented to Mr W. Smith, of Auckland, who, in August, 1886, rescued a woman from a cab which fell into the harbour from the Queen street wharf. Dissatisfaction exists because the valuation rolls for the Waikato district are not yet to hand, since the reviewers ate only now hearing the objections. In the absence of the rolls the local Board and Council elections cannot be held at the specified time, the first week in May. Mr E. Mitchelson returned this eveniug from Otorohanga, where he interviewed the Natives with regard to the land surveys. The Maoris expressed a willingness to have the land opened up. Mr Mitchelson brought with him a whalebone mere and some mats; presents from the Waikato chiefs to the Governor. A report from Dr Bell, tho Hospital Surgeon, shows a marked decrease In the number of typhoid fever cases during the present season. Fines amoUDtingin all to £7O, with costs£2B 15s, have been imposed at Waipu upon A. Magall, J. Lang, D. McLeod, M. Simson, Featherstone and Haswcll, for sly grogselling. Three members (A. K. Bailey, MoManus and McDermott) were expelled from the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club to-night, charges of professionalism being proved against them. •
