Roth was committed for trial to-day on the charge of making a false declaration of the property destroyed by fire, with intent to defraud the Insurance Companies. The house of J. .Id. Kerr, at Oxford, has been destroyed by fire. Tlio insurances are not known. Mr Fallon, contractor of the last two miles and a half of the Opunake section of the Kaihu Talley Railway, has been notified by the Company to cease operations for the present, thus throwing nearly 100 picked men out of .employment. This is one of the results of the action taken by the Kauri Timber Company against the property of the Railway Company. Napier, May 1. At a meeting of the creditors of Banner and Liddle the unsecured debts were shown to amount to £7780, and those to secured creditors to £13,818. The assets are—Stock, £1093 ; book debts, £5305 ; bills receivable, *9103; plant, £537; property, £75; deficiency, £3922. The meeting adjourned until Sth May. Blenhetm, May 1. The last civil case of the session was opened to-day, and excited great interest. The case was Rausome (a maltster) v. Fildes, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, a claim of £SOO for slander. Plaintiff alleged that on 2nd April defendant shouted out to him in the Market Place, “I’ll make a bankrupt of you,” and that he had been seriously damaged. Messrs W. Sinclair and S. P. McNab are for the plaintiff, and Mr E. T. Conolly for the defendant. Waipawa, May 1. A ’.supposed case of suicide occurred here last night, John Murphy, once a member of the police force here and at Blenheim, but lately barman at Scrimgeour'a Hotel, had his head smashed to pieces on the railway. It is thought he laid down with his body clear of the rails, and his head on the outside rail. The fatality occurred at the crossing near the Waipawa Railway Station. It is approached by a curve, and as the night was dark, and Murphy dressed in dark clothes, the driver did not see or know of the accident. Deceased had hc-en drinking heavily, and it is considered that in a fit of insanity he took the desperate step. Marton, May 1. A fatal accident occurred on the banks of the Rangitikei River, seven miles from here, yesterday. A Mao:i woman was driving a pair of horses in a waggon, when the horses jibbed, and backed over a cliff. The woman sustained injuries, from which she died in an hour. A child who was in the waggon escaped uninjured. Timaru, May 1. The criminal sessions concluded this morning. An old offender, Percy A. Smith, was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude for buglary at Melville Hotel, The last case, a charge of larceny by an hotel waiter of a £2O note found in a pocket-book in the street, has been adjourned until next session, the principal witness having left the place. Wanganui, May 1. Jackson, who escaped from gaol last night, was committed for trial at the District Court this morning. Christchurch, May 1. The Rhodes family have offered to rebuild the portion of the Cathedral spire destroyed by the earthquake in September last. Mr John Ollivier has announced himself as a candidate for Christchurch North. Jackson, the jockey who was injured at New Brighton races yesterday, died in the hospital this evening. At the Hospital Board meeting to-day Mr J. C. Boys withdrew his motion that the Board should raise a loan to purchase Addington Gaol for a contagious diseases hospital. The reason ia that the City Connoil has not taken the initiative of ascertaining whether the citizens were favourable or not

to the Contagious Diseases Act hoing brought into force. Dunedin, May 1. Arthur Latham, alias Edwards, alias Johnston, brought over from Hobart by the Rotomahana yesterday ia charge of Superintendent Llowhotiiam, of tho Berkshire police, will be sent on from Lyttelton, per lonic, to England. The accused was arrested in Hobart on a charge of larceny of jewellery valued at £BOO. 'Most of the property lias been recovered in Sydney. News lias-just been received of a large fire at St. Bathans. Damage £4OOO. No particulars yet to hand. A fisherman named Nicholas was drowned in the lower harbour. It appears that three boats were being towed up by a steamer when the one ia which Nicholas was in broke adrift. The other boats cast off and wens to the rescue, but Nicholas was not seen again, A strong south-west gale was blowing, and nothing could be done to recover the body. The City Council to-night decided to join with the Auckland Council in expressing appreciation of the bravery of the Samoans in the recent disaster. NELspN, May 1. The Nelson Rugby Union are considering communication from the Otago Union regarding sending a team Home. It was resolved that in their opinion it i 3 not desirable at present. The Albion Football Club sends a team to Wellington about May 24th to plav the Pirate and Oriental Clubs. A fire occurred this evening at the stables of tli6 Eelson Hotel, toward which a strong south-wester was blowing the flames. The Fire Brigade were, however, very smart, and in face of difficulties extinguished the flames. The damage ia comparatively small.
