THE VOLUNTEERS.
The Greytown Rifles and Wellington Guards met in a friendly contest at the Polhill Gully range on Tuesday morning, the visiting team arriving on New Year’s eve, and staying up late, which did not put them in the best of trim for meeting in ■ a rifle competition at 5 a.m. next morning, at which time the match commenced ; this perhaps was the cause of them suffering such a heavy defeat. On account of only nine of the Guardsmen rolling up the match was fired with that number a-sideonly. The shooting of the winning team was fairly good, averaging nearly 69. The best sooring was made by Sergeant Richards (83), Sergeant Townsend next (79), both being creditable scores, and taking into consideration that the former marksman is our very oldest at the present time, it makes it an excellent performance. After the teams had taken some light refreshment, and given cheers for each other, they dispersed. The following are the scores:—Guards’ team —Sergeant Richards, 83 ; Sergeant Townsend, 79 ; Volunteer A. Ballinger, 73 1 ; Volunteer McAskifl, 72 ; Captain Mclntosh, 70 ; Volunteer Russell, 64; Corporal W. Ballinger, 64; Sergeant Stevens, 60; Volunteer O’Flaherty, 55; total, 620. Greytown team —Sergeant Porritt, 65 ; Sergeant Williason, 65 ; Volunteer Hall, 65 ; Volunteer Beard, 63 ; Sergeant Trotman, 62 ; Volunteer Sayer, 60 ; Captain Cameron, 56 ; Volunteer Taylor, 51; Volunteer Nelson, 28 ; total, 515. Majority for Guards, 105. The conditions were seven shots at 200, 300 and 500yds.
