POPULATION OF VICTORIA.

The estimated population of the colony of Victoria on September 30, 1888, was 1,065,569. During the third quarter of 1888 the births and arrivals by sea were 31,666, and the deaths and departures by sea 16,516. The total increase during the quarter was 15,150- During the third quarter of 1883 the excess of registered births over registered deaths was 5,422, namely, 2490 males and 2932 females ; and the excess of recorded arrivals over recorded and unrecorded departures (the latter being estimated) was 9728, namely, 5824 males and 3904 females. The total gain to the population was thus 15,160, namely, 8314 males and 6836 females, as shown in the table. The total allowance for unrecorded departures since the census of 1881 was taken has been 39,850, viz., 31,804 males and 8046 females. Had no such allowance been made, the apparent population at the end of September would have been 1,115,419, viz., 604,437 males and

510,982 females. The increase of population during the third quarter of 1887 was 8643, or 6507 less than in the corresponding quarter of the present year (15,150). The increase duringthe firstnine months of lastyear wa3 24,706, or 14,744 less than in the first nine months of the current year (39,450). It should, however, be pointed out that the larger increases during IpBBI p BB are partly due to the influx cf persons connected with, and of visitors to, the Melbourne Dentennial International Exhibition, The total excess of recorded arrivals over recorded departures during the quarter under review was 10,774, the greatest gain to the population being from the United Kingdon (2941), the next from New Zealand (2853), then from Tasmania (2818), New South Wales (922), South and Western Australia (787), and foreign ports (453). It should be mentioned that all the arrivals and departures referred to are by sea, and the population estimate is based upon the assumption that the numbers entering and leaving the Colony over its borders are equal.
