NELSON REGATTA. The rowing events at the Nelson Regatta, held on Boxing Day, excited a great deal of interest here, from the fact that crews were sent from both the local dubs to compete in nearly all the events. The Star Club made quite a record, as their crews carried off the honours of the day, winning the three events they entered for. As the particulars published have been exceedingly meagre, we append a full account of the races. Senior Four-oar Inriggers ; two miles. First prize, £l2; second, £4.—Star Club, 1; Wellington Rowing Club, 2; Wakatu Rowing Club, 3. The Pioton and Nelson Rowing Clubs were also represented. A good start was effected, the Picton crew getting slightly the best of it. The Wellington Club crew, however, soon assumed the lead, the Picton crew coming next, and the Stars third. On passing the wharf the Wellingtons, who were pulling in midstream, had a lead of two lengths from the Stars, and the latter here cut in toward shore into calm water, aud shot pa3t the Wellingtons, who were straggling hard in the rough current. The Stars eventually won easily by two lengths, the Wellingtons second, and the Wakatus third. Had the Wellington Club kept clear of the “rip,” they would have occupied a better position than they did. Senior Four-oar Outriggers ; distance, two miles. First prize, £ls ; second, £4. — Star Boating Club, 1 ; Wellington Rowing Club, 2; Wakatu Rowing Club, 3. The Wakatus gained a slight advantage at the start, but the Stars, who rowed a faster stroke, were soon on even terms with them. After a quarter of a mile had been traversed the Stars were leading by half a length, the Wakatus and Wellingtons being on even terms. This order was maintained until the wharf was reached, when the Stars, who were in a good position, had a lead of two lengths from the Wellingtons, which they held to the finish, the Wakatus being a length behind the second boat. The winners rowed a capital, even stroke. Maiden Four-oar Inriggers ; distance, one mile and a half. First prize, £6 ; second, £2. —.Wakatu Rowing Club, 1; Wellington Rowing Club, 2; Eelson Rowing Club, 3. The Star Club did not start for this event, keeping their crew for the Junior Outrigger Race. The race was a very hollow affair, the Wakatus winning easily by several lengths, the Wellington’s beating Nelson by two lengths for second place. Junior Four - oar Outkiggers ; one mile and a half. First prize, £8 ; second, £2.—Star Boating Club, 1; Wakatu Rowing Club, 2 ; Nelson Rowing Club, 3. The Wellington Rowing Club also started. The Wellington and Nelson crews got the water first, but the Stars soon went to the front, with the Wakatus close up. The Stars kept their lead, ultimately winning by four lengths from the Wakatu Club, the Nelsons being third. The Wellington crew had a lead when passing the wharf, but they made the same mistake as their seniors did in the lurigged Race, and instead of keeping in shore they steered out into midstream, and finished outside the buoy, therefore not being placed. The Wakatus were placed at a disadvantage in this race owing to. the stroke losing his slide when half the distance had been rowed. The Star representatives were:—Senior Inrigged Fours —W. E. Bendall (bow), G. Cooper (2), A. W. Newton (3), J. E. Hume (stroke), S. Hume cox. Senior Outrigged Fours—W. G. Bendall (bow), G. Cooper (2), J. E. Hume (3), A. S. Biss (stroke), S. Hume (cox). Junior Outrigged Fours—C. J. Cooper (bow), W. Morrali (2), C. Millward (3), C. Richardson (stroke), S. Hume (cox). The Wellingtons were represented by W. Bridson (bow), E. Rose (2), J. Darby (3), T, McKay (stroke) in the senior races, and by F. Bacon (bow), A. Armstrong (2), G. Parsons (3), W. McLoughlin (stroke) in the Maiden and Junior races, Master J. Rickman apting a 3 coxswain. Owing to an injury to his leg, Sullivan (No. 3 man in the Wellington Club’s senior crew) was unable to row, which placed them at some disadvantage. Sullivan’s place was taken by Darby, The entries fop the Star Club’s Junior Fours close on the 29th inßtant, LYTTELTON REGATTA, (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
