PALMERSTON NORTH.

(from our own correspondent.) January 2. The Palmerston North Caledonian Society’s meeting, held yesterday on the Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s show ground, was in all respects a most successful one. The weather was simply delightful. Crowds of people congregated from all parts of the district, and, roughly speaking, I should not think there were fewer than 2000 on the ground. From the subjoined list of events it will be seen that a capital programme was presented, and the proceedings were enlivened by an excellent band from Feildiug, under the leadership of Bandmaster Daw. The hunters’ competition, a new feature in these sports, and one which was greatly enjoyed, was well contested, nine horses being entered for the event. Mr Blower, of the Club Hotel, had the publican’s booth, and I should say did a good stroke of business. There were also a refreshment booth and fruit stall, at which Mr and Mrs Printzen presided. The luncheon was provided by Mr Frazer. Should the sports be held on the same ground another year it will be advisable to have the running track put in better order, as both runners and walkers laboured under great disadvantages from the roughness of the ground. The wrestling this year brought out much better entries than on any former occasion, and the events were very well contested. Messrs D. H. Macarthur, M.H.R., J. Carmody, R. Henderson, J. L. Wiltshire, P. B. Ligertwood, T. Hastings, and W. Waugh acted as judges, and Mr H. Littlejohn as timekeeper, the arduous duties connected with these offices being most faithfully performed.
