SPORTING.

BACING.

(By Marti® i.) The Boxing Day meetings seem to have had good weather everywhere, and there Was good racing all round. The only meetings of importance in the vicinity of Wellington were those at Masterton and Palmerston. At the former meeting the blue riband, the Masterton-Opaki Derby, fell to Harlequin, owned by Mr J. Maoara. Mr Tanered had a good look in, Forester (who must have been in a kind humour) winning both the Railway Plate and Masterton Handicap, while The Spy appropiiated the Opaki Stakes and ran second in the Tradesmen’s Handicap. The latter appears to be coming on, for in the Opaki Stakes, a mile and a half, he gave Cupid 121 b and a beating, and in the Trades men’s Handicap he'managed to carry 9st into second place. The Wellington contingent had a bad day of it, for Cupid did rot. get a win, and Giriri, after running second and third, won the Consolation and only paid £1 18s. I hear that a good many clever city people went eyes out on Cupid, in which case they would leave their money in the Wairarapa. I notice that Mermaid (presum. ably the heroine of the Island Bay Hack race) ran second in a hack race. At Palmerston the big event, the Boxing Day Handicap, fell to the ex-hack Germaine, who managed to beat Brown Duke by a head. Strenuous and Ahua were generally fancied, but the going was a bit heavy for the former, and Ahua could only get third. Mr Barnard, the clever party who scooped a pool with bis mare Jennj at the Hutt a year or two ago, fell foul of the stewards, and the mare, owner, and jockey were disqualified for twelve months. Mr Munn had a slice of lack at the Napier Meeting with Partner, who won him the Summer Handicap from Lenore, Waterfall, Silence and others. In the Christmas Handicap the speedy Whisper was put down by Lady Florin, to whom she was giving 211bs. Mr Huntsr, however, pulled off the Maiden Plate with Yatterine. Man Friday won the Consolation, getting 2st 31b from Silence, the only other starter. The foreign horses had a bit the best of it at the West Coast meetings. At Westport Sweetie won the Trial Stakes and Christmas Handicap ; at Hokitika the evergreen Hew* appropriated the Hokitika Handicap, and Corrie Vick the Westland Handicap ; and at Reefton the Inangahna Cup fell to Hermitage, while Escapade won the Railway Stakes and Midsummer Handicap. Lochiel has added another to his list of big victories by winning the Auckland Cup> and has at the same time given us another proof of what a wonderfully good horse he is when he is wanted. In this instance, however, his victory must be regarded as rather a lucky one, for there is no knowing what might have happened had Manton Btood up. As far as can be judged Mr Butler’s colt was only just starting to go at the entrance to the straight, and must have made things very interesting at the finish, for Lochiel appeared to have had all he could do to settle Hilda and British Lion, though it must bo borne in mind that he, too, was interfered with. Nelson was also well in it, and might have had a say in the finish. However, it is no use talking of what might have been : Lochiel won, and that’s sufficient, no doubt, for his owners, who. I hear, backed him bravely. The Auckland Cup was first run for in 1874, when Templeton carried Bst 111 b to victory, ridden by Wattie. Toi was seoond and Yatterina third. Next year Kingfisher, an outsider, won easily from Guy Fawkes, Toi being third. In 1876 Ariel won, carrying Bst 21b ; Danebury (who won the Wairarapa Cap in 1880) was second, and Izak Walton third. Lara was the hero of the next race for the Cup, the distance being increased that year to two miles and a quarter. In 1878 and 1879 Ariel won again with the aid of Matthews, and in 1880 he ran third, Foul Play winning in 4min 16seos, then the fastest on record for the race. This record was lowered by the plucky little King Quail in 1881, the son of Yattendon carrying 7st 41b to victory in 4min Bsec. In 1882 Welcome Jack won the double of Cup and Derby, Tim Whiffler being his runner up in the Cup ; and in 1883 Salvage won, Tim Whiffler running seoond again, and Libeller third. The next year brought a big surprise with it, The Poet, with 6st 121 b up, putting down a big field. The next three years saw the mighty Nelson lead the field home each time, his time in 1885 (4 min) being the record for the colonies for two miles and a quarter. Some very good dividends were paid on Boxing Day. Taratahi, winner of the hack race at Masterton, paid £72 9s ; Moonlight, £29 14s in the Champion Trot at Heathcote;

Tartar, £SO 12s in the Christmas Handicap at Auckland. £56 was paid in a selling race at Maori Kaik, and at Tokomaiiiro there were several good dividends. Torohunga, by Danebury—Dido, scooped the pool at the Lower Valley meeting, wiuningtheFlying,Martinborough and L.V.J.C. Handicaps. Manton suffered bis second defeat at Auckland on New Year’s Day by being beaten by Cuirassier in the Derby. The C.J.C. Derby winner’s accident in the Auckland Cup probably has a good deal to do wiih his running, but Cuirassier’s time—2min 40Wcs—showed that the full brother to Trenton was quite good enough to make things interesting all starting fit and well. The victory of Lochiel in the Newmarket must have been almost a foregone certainty, but British Lion’s win in the A.R.C. Handicap seems to have been a bib of a surprise, Nelson having been well supported. Lady Florin appropriated the New Year’s Handicap at Napier pretty easily, Lenore running second and Orwell third. Partner, who turned up trumps on Boxing Day, was not in it on Tuesday, and appears to have been pretty well last in everything he started in.

Stead, however, declined to enter a protest in the matter, though asked by Clifford to do so. Auckland, December 28. The fall which Manton received in the Cup is likely to prove of more serious effect than was anticipated. The colt was at exercise yesterday, but moved very queerly, and it is said to be by no means certain that he will fulfil his engagement in the Derby on Tuesday. With the prospect of Manton being out of the race 100 to 40 would have been accepted about Cuirassier, but the layers were not inclined to. do businesg. Auckland, January 1.

The second day’s racing of the A.R.C.’s meeting took place... to-day, when about 5000 were present, including the Governor and Admiral Fairfax. The sport was of an excellent character, the Derby and A.R.C. Handicap, the principal events, being especially good races. From the fact that Manton had a severe cold in the head and had moved sorely since his fall in the Cup, the Derby was considered very open, and Cuirassier, the winner, was well supported by his party. At the conclusion of the race he was decorated with the blue riband, and led about the lawn. New Year’s Hurdle Race, of 80 sovs; two miles. —Mr Gallagher’s Peter Osbeck, list 41b (Ferons), 1; Mr H. Harrison’s Catesby, Bst 101 b (G. Laing), 2. There were no other starters. Peter Osbeck monopolised the betting, and he won easily by a length. Time, 4min 7sec. Midsummer Handicap, o f 150 sovs ; five furlongs. Mr C. Beresford’s Corunna, 9st (Kean), 1 ;MrW. Bobbett’s Quadrant, 7st 41b (Cook), 2 ; Mr W. Somerville’s Cissy, Bat 61b (Taylor), 3. Corunna won by half a length, Quadrant beating Cissy by a neck for second place. The Baron was fourth, Nosegay fifth, and Lochness last. Time, lmin Dividends—lnside, LI 163 ; outside, LI 15s. Great Northern Derby, of 760 sovs ; one mile and a half.—Mr R. Burke’s Cuirassier, by Musket—Frailty, Bst 101 b (Kean), 1; Mr P. Butler’s Manton, by Musket—Tres Deuce, Bst 101 b (Holmes) 2. Mr W. Somerville’s Hilda, by Musket —Ouida, sst 71b (Taylor), 3. Raglan, Bst 101 b, also started. Manton was a red-hot favourite on the totalisator. Raglan was the first to move when the flag fell, and he ran into the straight with a length’s advantage of Hilda, and Manton that distance in front of Cuirassier. Raglan, running with his mouth open, led the field past the stand. Going out of the straight, Manton was in company with Major George’s cole, and this pair showed the road along the back of the course until approaching the cutting, when Raglan ceased to make any further effort, and Manton took the lead, with Hilda second. Raglan fell away to the last place as they ran out of the cutting, where Hilda joined issne with Manton, and sweeping past the half mile post together, they ran into the 1

straight stride for stride. When their heads wtre turned for homo Cuirassier was with the leaders, and a great battle ensued, the trio contesting every inch of the way amid the greatest excitement. It seemed that Manton, on the the inside, would win, but at the end of the lawn rails Cuirassier broke the lines, and leaving the others in a gallant fashion, ran homo a winner by two lengths, Manton beating Hilda by a neck for second honours. Raglan was out-paced. Time, 2min Dividends —Inside, L 4 4s 6d ; outside, L 4 14s. Pretender won the Selling Race, beating three others. A.R.C. Handicap, of 250 sovs ; one mile and a half.—Mr J. Jones’ British Lion, 7st 81b (McGrath), 1 ; Major George’s Nelson, 93t 121 b (Pearson), 2 : Mr La Leliy’s Clogs, 7st 71b (Farrell), 3. Lady Norah, Escutcheon, Balista and Tartar completed the field. Nelson was a hot favourite. Balista and Tartar were the first to show in front, and they led past the stand with British Lion, Nelson, Clogs and Lady Norah running in that order. Tartar set out to make the pace, and was first in the straight with three lengths advantage of British Lion, Balista having fallen away. Clog 3 and Nelson had improved their position as they made the turn at the back of the course, and at the threequarter mile post British Lion was on terms with Tartar, and in the cutting he wrested the lead from the latter and passed the half-mile post in front. Going very strongly, he was first into the straight, a length in front of Tartar, with Clogs third and Nelson fourth. A great race home ensued. Opposite the Derby stand Nelson emerged from the crowd and, racing past Clogs and Tartar, crept up to British Lion, who, however, answered the resolute call made upon him by staving off the favourite’3 rush in time to win by half a length. Time, 2min 38sec. Dividends—lnside, L47s ; outside, L 3 15s 6d. Maiden Plate, of 80 sovs : one mile. —Mr J. Marshall’sßraemar Bst4lb(K.ean), 1 ; Mr D. McKinnon’s Sir Walter, 6st 71b (Gallagher), 2; Mr J. Chaafe’s Rataplan, 63t 71b (Smith), 3. Puschka, Satyr, Belmont, and Try Fluke also ran. Won by a length. Time, lmin 453ec. Dividend, L2 2s 6d. The South Auckland Cup was run at Hamilton and was won by Haricot. Mr P. Butler has purchased a yearling colt by Cadogan—Corcyra, from Major Mair for 150 guineas. Auckland, January 2.

The Auckland Racing Club concluded the Summer Meeting to-day. About 4000 people were present, including the Governor. The weather was beautiful. Grand Stand Handicap. —Hilda, .1 ; Tartax*, 2 ; British Lion, 3. Also ran—Lady Norah, Clogs, Escutcheon and Raglan. After several breaks away the flag fell to a good start. Passing the stand, British Lion was in front, followed by Raglan. As they ran along the back of the course, Raglan, Clogs and Tartar were racing almost on terms, British Lion being sixth. Half-way across the top stretch, Katterns brought Hilda up on the outside, and after a good finish she ran home a winner by half a length ; a neck between second and third. Time, 2min 39j : sec. Totalisator dividends —lnside, L 4 2s ; outside, L 3 Bs. Nursery Handicap. —Quilt (late Remnant), 1 ; Lochness, 2 ; The Baron, 3. Also ran—The Beau, Nosegay, and Dolosa. Dolosa and Lochness made the running until opposite the Derby stand, when Quilt shot out to the front, and succeeded in winning by two lengths. Time, lmin 18Jsec. Dividend, LI 17s. Auckland of 150 sovs ; two miles.—Mr G. G. Stead’s Lochiel, 9st 41b (Clifford), 1 ; Mr P. Butler’s Manton, Bst' (Holmes), 2 ; Major George’s I Nelson, 9st 41b (Pearson), 3. St Michael | (Bst 131 b) was the only other starter. The flag fell to a poor start, Lochiel going off with the lead, St Michael hanging at the post. Lochiel was first into the straight, and led past the stand, with Nelson and St Michael on close terms, Manton being two lengths away. Going out of the straight Manton and Nelson were together, second, and as they ran along the back of the course, Butler’s horse further improved his position, and was half a length behind Lochiel. Sweeping through the cutting, Nelson , began to move in earnest, and the pace now became very fast, St Michael dropping hopelessly to the rear. Lochiel and Manton passed the half-mile post together, but at the entrance to the straight the former had half a length the best of it, and though Clifford had to call on him at the end of the lawn rails, the Prince Charlie horse never surrendered his advantage, and won easily at the finish by a length amidst great excitement. Manton beat Nelson by a head for second position. Auckland Steeplechase, of 250 sovs ; about three miles and a half.—Mr N. Dickey’s Recruit, by Daydawn, 9st (Pearson), 1 ; Mr M. Gallagher’s Peter Osbeck, lOst 71b (Fergus), 2 ; Mr J. Rae’s Orangeman, lOst 41b (owner), 3. Mangaohane, 12st (Hickey); Magnesia, list (Nolan) ; Falcon, lOst 61b (T. Lennard) ; Artist, 9st 101 b (Edgecombe) were the other starters. Mangaohane and Orangeman were favourites on the totalisators. When the flag fell Artist jumped away in front, with Mangaohane, Recruit, Peter Osbeck, Falcon, Orangeman, and Magnesia in that order. At the brush hurdle Artist increased his lead, and he was 15 lengths in front as they ran up the hill. Magnesia having dropped further away, Recruit was second at the top of the hill, where Artist gained further

ground, and the latter came down <-he hill at a sound pace and led on to the course proper. Here Recruit, at the head of the second division, drew closer to the leader, and at the old water jump he dispossessed Artist of the premier position. The latter, however, was full of running, and again took command at the back of the course, where the field be s an to straggle. _ Peter Osbeck ran into third place at the cutting, but Artist went further away going up the hill, and at the top he had gained an advantage of thirty lengths, all the horses jumping beautifully, whilst Recruit was second, Peter Osbeck third, Falcon fourth, and Mangaohane fifth. The field had again begun to close on Artist as they raced at the double in front of the stand, where it was evident that Mangaohane was out of the race, as he was running in a very .laboured fashion. Recruit was only about a length behind Artist at the back of the course, but the latter when going very strongly fell when coming-down the hill and rolled over his rider, who was severely shaken. Recruit was thus;-leffc with a clear road before him, and though Peter Osbeck was resolutely palled upon he was never able to get within several lengths of Mr Dickey’s horse, who won easily amidst great cheering. Orangeman was third, some distance away, Mangaohane fourth, and Magnesia fifth. The others did not finish. Time, Bmin 36sec. Dividends Inside, L 6 14s ; outside, L 7 17s 6d. A protest, entered against Recruit on the ground of wrongful entry, was dismissed. Selling, Stakes, six furlongs, was won by Mr O. Chaafe’s Tartar, 7st 21b (Smith), 2 ; Mr J. Carnegie’s Pretender, 7st 21b (Holmes), 3. Escutcheon, Clogs, Braemar, and Leorine completed the field... Balista was first away, but Braemar arid Tartar took uji the running until, in the straight, Balista came again with a brilliant run, winning by a length. Time, lmin 45sec. Dividends—lnside, Ll 5 16s ; outside, Ll 7 6s.
