(a) Mr Blackburne intended playing for ah old favourite (Legalle’s) mate, and should have played 6 Kfc to B 3, if Kt takes P ; 7 Kt takes Kfc, B takes Q; 8 B takes P, ch, K to K2; 9 Kfc to Q 5, mate. (b) Nothing daunted by having missed his way to a direct attack in the opening, the blindfold player builds up his game with a view to future events. (c) Castling on the King’s side, of course* cannot be effected. (d) Rather than waste time thus he should strike put on his own account by P to Q 4, or P to K Kt 4. (e) To guard against B to Kt 3. (f) Threatening to win the Queen by Kt to Kfc 6, ch. (g) Beautifully played, and very accurately worked out. (h) If P takes P ; 23 Q to Q 5 (if), Q to B sq, mate follows in four moves. (i) If Kfc takes R ; 24 P to B 7, Q to B sq ; 25 R takes P, ch, P takes R; 26 QtoQ 5, ch, and mates next move. (j) Clearly perceiving that winning the Queen would lead to very little more besides. (k) The coup juste. Black is defenceless.Leeds Mercury. MATE IN TWO BY DISCOVERY. Both were clever, yet the problem Was a little hard to solve ; Feathers for their nest were wanting, But to mate was their resolve. Life’s too dismal without loving, And to love these two were prone, But to mortals ’tis not given Here to live on love alone. So they sadder grew and sadder Every time they talked it o’er; For when means are very slender Strongest love won’t make them more. They at length grew quite bewildered, And each heaved a heavy sigh When they thought their fate so dreadful That they both should single die. But Death kindly took a Bishop/ Who had left his cash to Kate, Then she found the problem easy, With discovered cheque to mate. —lllustrated Sporting and Dramatic News.
