FEILDING.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) December 24. The election for a member of the Borough Council, to fill the vacancy caused by the elevation of Councillor Monckton to the mayoralty, took place on Friday last; and caused considerable interest. There were two candidates—viz., Mr John Gould and Mr Edmond Goodbehere. Mr G. T. H. Lyne had been nominated, but had retired from the contest. The result of the polling was that Mr Good.behere received 93 votes and Mr Gould 78. It is generally understood, however, that, while Mr Gould got a minority of votes, the majority of the burgesses recorded in his favour. A decided change for the better has taken place in the weather, the gales and winter-like cold having given place to warm, genial showers, followed by something like real summer. This agreeable change is putting everybody in good spirits in view of the approaching holidays, for the full enjoyment of which all are on the tiptoe of anticipation. The bill of fare for our local public festivities is as follows Boxing Day, the annual athletic sports, for which there is a much larger number of nominations than usual; Boxing Fight, a grand entertainment by. the “Plantation Minstrels;” Thursday, the 27th, the Hack Race Meeting, under the auspices of the Feilding Jockey Club, followed by another entertainment by the above-named minstrels, with a new programme. Yesterday afternoon the Feilding Brass Band performed a selection in the rotunda, on Mancliester-square, in the presence of a large concourse of listeners. The programme was cut short to a'low of the annual camp meeting of the Primitive Methodists, which was held on an adjacent .spot. In this meeting the Salvationists joined, and there was a numerous attendance. The State School Committee have selected the Rev G. Wilk, of Manaia, and Miss E. Stewart, of Dunedin, for appointment to the respective vacancies caused by the resignations of Mr Dowling as head teacher, and Miss Lightboun as first assistant. <
