RESIDENT MAGISTRATE S COURTAt the Resident Magistrate’s Court on Friday, before Mr H. W. Robinson, R. M., a first offender for drunkenness was fined ss. William Smith, charged with having lefts cart unattended, was fined Is and costs, 7s. Further evidence was taken in the caße against Richard Shields,- who is charged with having neglected to deliver up his uniform on ceasing to be a member of the Wellington Rifle Volunteers, after whioh the case was again adjourned till January 8. J. S. Harris was charged with having unlawfully on his person certain articles of disguise. The evidence of the arresting constable was to the effect that the accused was walking about on Lambtonquay on Thursday afternoon in female attire. In defence, the accused said he represented a Birmingham military tailor, and a* masquerade costume maker iu this city, and it was for the purpose of advertising these firms that he went about in different ooßtumes. He was not aware that this was an offence against the law. The charge was dismissed. William David Vogel was charged with having failed to provide for the maintenance of his three infant children. An order was made for the payment of 5s per week for each child. The defendant.was also ordered to find sureties, himself in £lO and one surety of a similar sum, within a week, or in default two months’ imprisonment.

At the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday morning, before Messrs E. Baker, Dunne, and F. H. Fraser, two first offenders were mulcted in the usual amount for drunken* ness, and a woman named Mary Jones, similarly charged, was fined 40s, or seven days’ imprisonment. Annie Greer, aliaß Turner, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for being the occupier of a house in Quin-street frequented by vagrants. . A woman named Dinah Koch, charged with stealing articles to the value cf 30s, the pro. perty of George Stock, was defended by Mr Jelliooe, and after hearing evidence the Bench dismissed the case. Mr Robinson, R.M., beard in his room two charges against Wi Parata, preferred by C. A. Climie, surveyor to the TeJHoro Road Board, (1) of having removed certain survey pegs put in by the complainant in connection with the laying off of a road through the Ngarara Block, Waikanae ; and (2) of obstructing the plaintiff and bis assistants in tbeir work. Mr Chapman was for the prosecution, and Mr Jellicoe for the defence. At the close of the plaintiff’s case Mr Jellicoe argued that there was no case to answer, but his Worship thinking otherwise, Mr Jellicoe asked for a decision. Mr Robinson reserved judgment till 10th January. Three first offenders for drunkenness were mulcted in tho usual amount (ss) at the Resident Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning. No fewer than eleven persons were charged with drunkenness before Mr H. W.'Robinson at the Resident- Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning. Hugh Kerr, who was charged with being an habitual drunkard, was fined 10s, or in default 24 homr3’ imprisonment. Sarah Tindal, alias Trundel, charged with the same offence, was fined £2, or in default seven days’ imprisonment. Six others, being first offenders, were dealt with in the usual way, and three others were discharged. Robert Whitchurch, charged with having behaved in a disorderly manner iu Abel Smith-street, on Christmas Day, was fined £l, or in default 48 hours’ imprisonment.
