(By Martini.) FIXTURES. December 31— Canterbury Jockey Club's Summer M January I—Napier Park Now Year Meeting January 1 and 2--Rangitikei U. C. Annual Meeting. April 22 and 23—Canterbury Jock y Club s Autumn Meeting. . Declaration op Weights &c. January 7— Weights Dunedin Cup and Publicans Handicap. Tranter, who was under offer to a Victorian sportsman for GOO guineas, failed to pass examination, and the sale didn t eventuate. Chic, by Cadogan—La Mode* has been sold for 400 guineas, to go to Sydney, Mr J. Monaghan being the purchaser; It is said that she is intended for pony racing. Tebford returned from Australia to Auckland last week. Sylvia and Onyx, dims of Martini-Henry and Nordenfeldt respectively, have been mated with St. Leger ; and Mersey and Ires Deuce with Nordenfeldt; * Mazeppa ’ reports that Mr T. Dwyer’s mare Camerine was on Friday morning taken out for a canter at the Forbury. Cotton put his own son, a 6st lad, on her, with orders to take her round twice at a steady pace in the company of Trapper. The mare at the time seemed quite well. For a day or two she had been picking ove_* her food, though she had eaten it. When she had completed a mile at an easy canter, Cotton noticed that she was bleeding from the mouth, and signalled the boy to stop. He did bo, and proceeded to lead her away, Cotton taking off the saddle as she walked along. Before she had got quite off the course the mare staggered and fell, and giving one slight kick died on the spot. The whole thing—canter, mishap, and death—took place inßide of five minutes. Camerine was by Satirist, and was apparently just coming into form. She had had no violent exercise at all ; indeed, she had done no work at all the day prior to her death. Cotton says that though he has been training for so many years this is the first time a horse has died with him. A further stroke of bad luck has befallen the same stable, Le Temps having proved to be so sore that it has been deemed advisable to throw him out of work for the present; and Vortex, the two-year-old son of Gorton and Fairy, is also put on the shelf in the meantime, having become shank sore all round.

In the first oir* cuit Nelson led the pair by three lengths, and on the second round, although Manton and British Lion were extended, they were unable to get up to the son of Cole, who finished some lengths in front. It may be mentioned that Nelson. only had a boy in the saddle. Lochiel strode over two miles on the tan at a strong pace. Lady Norali put in a couple oE miles at a strong pace, and Hilda did-ser-viceable work, pulling up better than usual. Remnant was sent five furlongs at top

speed, and Cissy, The Beau, and Tekstim were associated together in a six furlong gallop at top Speed, the (first-named -finishing strong and well. In conseqdenco of Nelson’s gallop this morning he has shortened in price in quotation, and 4 to 1 is now being offered. This morning, at Ellerslie, Hilda and Pusohka in company were sent a sound gallop on the plough. At the six.furlong post Pusehka dropped out, and Teksum joined in, the cup mare having Balista as her companion for the second circuit. In the first part of the journey Hilda was decidedly sore, but it wore off, and she finished home in front of Balista. The time recorded was fair. Tartar put in a circuit on the |plough alone, when he was. joined by Rataplan, and he finished a strong round. Nelson and Lochiel accomplished two rounds* the latter being taken at a fast pace. Nelson finished strong, but the opinion is that Lochiel had the best of the run. Manton and Antelope were associated together in good work over a mile and a half on the plough, the first-named finishing in front. The time for the last round was 4min 56sec. Raglan evidently was to have worked with the pair, but he could not get on terms. British Lion was sweated on the plough, and Mangaohane half-pace work on the tan. Pretender strode once round on the plough, and Lady Norah accomplished a strong round on the same traok. This mare has much improved. To-day 4 to 1 was accepted about Nelson winning the Cup ; 200 to 12 was wanted about Antelope, but 100 to 10 was the best offer. Auckland, December 24.

The acceptances for the Great Foal Stakes are as follow :—Remnant, The Baron, Cissy, Corunna. The Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting was opened to-day. The weather was beautifully fine, and about 6000 were present, including Admiral Fairfax. The Gup race was an interesting one, but the finish was marred by Martin’s accident at the entrance to the straight. Lochiel was favourite on the inside totalisator, but Nelson received the greatest support from the public in the machine. The mishap was caused by Antelope jumping across in front of Manton, and the latter fell on to his side and threw Holmes. Nelson was running immediately in the wake, and he was thrown on to his knees, and Lochiel, who was half a length behind Nelson, had to be pulled out, and came up on the outside, his stride being thus broken. The opinion is that Lochiel would have won

in any case ; but the person who rode Nelson says that he had not moved on his horse, and from the manner in which he was bounding along he must have run a great, horse, and Manton .would also have made a splendid stand. Trial Stakes, of 60 sovs ; one mile.— Mr E-. Burke’s br c Cuirassier, 3yrs, 7st lllb (Kean), 1; Mr J. Carnegie’s br g Pretender, aged, Bst lllb (Skirving), 2 ; Mr W, Bobbett’s blk c Patchwork, 3yrs, 7st lllb (Cook), 3. .Puschka, Bst 21b, was the only other starter. Cuirassier was the favourite. Jones’ blk h British Lion, syrs, 7st 31b (McGrath), 3. Manton, Bst 71b (Holmes) ; Lady Norah, 7st 61b (Cook) ; Clogs, 7st 41b (Brimmer) ; Leopold, 7st (Lindsay)'; Antelope, 6st 131 b (Priest); Tartar, 6st 71b (Smith); Leorina, 7st 71b (Cousins), were the other starters. The post betting was 2 to 1 a»ainst Lochiel, 3 to 1 Nelson, 4 to 1 Manton, 7 to 1 Hilda, 10 to 1 Clogs, 15 to 1 British Lion, 20 to 1 Antelope. There were several breaks away at the post, Nelson being especially prominent, and when at length the flag was lowered he and Hilda ran out in front together. They had just set the field going when they dropped away, and Clogs took command, with Tartar, British Lion, and Manton next; Lochiel and Nelson running last in company. Clogs led through the cutting, the pace being very sound, and the Leolinus mare was first to land in the straight, but passing the stand the field closed up, and Clogs, Tartar, and British Lion were together leading, with Antelope a neck in front of Manton and Lady Norah; then came Nelson, Lochiel, Antelope, and Hilda, Leorina closing in the field. Turning out of the straight Nelson commenced to go up, and a few strides further on Lochiel also left the rear. At the cutting Clogs had Tartar as her immediate follower, whilst Lochiel had crept into third place, and was in company with British Lion, Lady Norah, Manton, and Nelson next. Lochiel fell away as they swept out of the cutting, and British Lion, getting his head in front at the half-mile post, came on at the head cf a closelyboxed field, Hilda, who had come with a steady rush, be,ing at his quarters, whilst INorah and Lochiel were racing stride for stride behind the pair. Manton here, ran out from the ruck, and he was just set going in earnest ,when, nearing the entrance to the straight, he stumbled and fell on to his knees, thus interfering with Nelson and Lochiel. When their heads were fairly turned for home British Lion was hailed as the winner, whilst Hilda was alongside him, and it seemed that the result would be decided ffiy this pair, but Lochiel had go,t into his stride again, and British Lion at once compounding, the favourite challenged Hilda, and settling her pretensions at' the lawn rails, won by a length amidst great cheering. British Lion was third two-lengths away, Nelson, Lady Norah, Leopold, Clogs, and Antelope finishing in the order named, with Leorina last. Manton was not hurt, and he was led in by Mr Butler. Holmes was also uninjured. The time was 4mih 32sec.. Dividends —Inside, L2 tickets, L 6 3s ; puiside, LI tickets, L 3 4s. ’ 'Hurdle R.-ce of 100 sovs ; two miles pnd a quarter.—Mr M.
