Last Friday was the longest day of the year. Owing to the dull weather daylight did not appear at Wellington in the morning until after J o’clock. Mr Mackay, head master of the Wellington College, who has gone to Melbourne and Sydney on a holiday trip after the lahoqrs of the year, has been commissioned to inquire into, the working of the secondary schools of Victoria and New South Wales, with a view of making a report to the Board of Governors on his return. Last night week’s presentation of Handel ’ “Messiah”- by the Festival choir and orchestra took place under several adverse conditions, and cannot be described as an unqualified success. The weather was exceedingly unfavourable, the storm of wind and rain beating on the iron roof of the Garrison Hall so loudly as often nearly to drown the music, and the smallness of the audience, owing to the bad weather, undoubtedly tended to damp the spirits of the performers, while the impossibility of holding more than three rehearsals had evidently been prejudicial. The choruses were as a rule well sung—one or two splendidly—but, with few exceptions, seemed to lack fire, and the triumphs of “Israel in Egypt” were certainly not repeated. The orchestra (ably led by Mr Boyd) was generally efficient, although not wholly irreproachable. The solo numbers were allotted as follows : —Soprano, Mrg Levin, Mrs Boyd, and Miss Newton ; contralto, Mrs Palairet, Mrs Webb, and Miss Greig ; tenor, Mr Page ; bass, Messrs Prouse, Waters, and Widdop. The soloists acquitted themselves fairly, but there were several unfortunate slips, and additional rehearsals would manifestly have been beneficial. Mrs Levin and Mr Prouse (in his first song) carried off chief honours. Mr Parker conducted with his oustomary skill and tact, which were several times very prominently displayed. Mr Hautrie West presided judioiously at tho organ, and Mr Cimino played the obbligato to the “Trumpet” song well, but too loudly, the singer being sometimes quite overwhelmed. Only a selection from the oratorio was given, the performance thus terminating at 10.15, a very wise course, the usual error of Wellington concerts, their excessive length, being thus prudently avoided.
