The thirty-seventh annual report, to 31st March last, of the Birkback Building Society (London) is a wonderful record of progress. It holds subscriptions, £542,615,. and deposits, £3,831,824, making a • total of £4,374,469, the .whole of which is withdraw, able on demand. . But it ha 3 also investments, which can" bo immediately realised, amounting to £4,051,899, a sum exceeding its deposits by £220,075. Its loans amount *6 £544,784. The society really transacts a large banking business, end from this point of view it>3 deposit and current accounts are exceeded in magnitude by only ten London banka. f By Lord Douglas Gordon’s death the succession devolves on Lord Esme Gordon, but he has no son, and the eventful heir of the historic title of Huntly will probably be found in the son of Lord Granvillo Gordon. Lady Granville Gordon is one of tho London ladies who have taken to trade. She is a fashionable and popular dressmaker, and her sister, Mrs G. Howard, is a bonnetmaker of high repute.
