THE RING.

[by onlooker.]

Dick Matthews was in Wellington last week, and away down in an unfrequented part of the town we had a' few sharp rounds of talk in which Matthews got done. At present he has a bad right hand, the oft' repeated work of knocking out all comers having caused the knuckles and back of the hand to swell very badly. He is going down the West Coast of the South Island, where he may do a little showing, but not much. It will be quite Christmas time before he is ready for hard work. Otherwise he looks better than he has for a long time. Matthews is intimately acquainted with JaokHon, and, asked what he thought of him, informed me that the darkey was a real good one, and wonderfully clever. He thinks he (Jackson) can beat a lot of them in America, but that he isn’t good enough for Kilrain. J. Fogarty, the Australian middle-weight, landed at the Bluff last week. I hear that he is likely to have a go in with Laing. Fogarty is a very clever boxer, and takes a deal of licking, but it is doubtful whether Laing’s weight,, agility and science would not be a bit too much for him.

That was a queer affair, that Laing-Petten-gell fight—a strange, funny affair. These unsatisfactory fights are beginning to pall upon the appetite. We don’t want sanguinary encounters, but we do want square dinkum sets-to. Sandall, the New Zealand amateur champion, has been matched against Seale, amateur champion of New South Wales. The trophy is a magnificent gold watch, and the date is the Ist of December.
