WOODVILLE.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) . , October 17.
When Mr Mitclxelson, the Minister for Public Works, was here the other day, the Mayor brought one of his pet schemes under the Minister’s hotice, viz, the completion of the railway from Wood villa to ScarboroV Scarboro’ is the township of the WoodvilleiMangatainoko Special Settlement, and is about half a mile or mile north-west of Pahiatua. The only work of any magnitude in taking the railway there is the bridging of the Manawatu at Ngaawapurua, and this has already beeu done at a cost that will run up to not far short of 1840,000 by the time Mr Peeble’s present contract for protective works is finished. Almost all the rest is easy formation, nearly level, and Mr Peeble’s contract includes the heaviest part of it, so that by the time he js done there will be very little left to do. -The Minister made the usual reply that the work was not provided for, and that it could not be done till a new loan was raised.
The planßfor the new school at Mangatainoko provide for a building 40ft by 22ft. It is to be fitted up to accommodate about, eighty or a hundred children. I believe the petitioners signed a list showing a hundred children of school ago in the neigbourhood. The school is to be of rusticated weatherboard, with a hip roof. It is provided that the roof shall be of iiu totara shingles. Seeing that the insurance companies are refusing to renew policies over shinglo-roofod buildings, or to take new risks on them in the bush, and that this school is bound to be surrounded by bush fires only a very few chains off —fires that will be recurring for some years—it does appear to be a very foolish thing to put such a roof on. It will not be a cheap one either, for such shingles as specified will cost fully as much as iron; and as the contract provides that the builder is to keep the building in good order for three months, a good many contractors say they will have nothing to do with it, since they would be unable to insure it.
