evening, Mr George Taylor, a resident of this city, offered to subscribe LIO,OOO yearly for three years to establish a Congregational College at the Melbourne University, provided a similar amount; is subscribed by the public. He also promised to give L 20,000 on the same conditions ftr the establishment of a school. LIO,OOO was subscribed in the room. Perth, W.A., October 11. The Legislative Council opened yesterday. The Governor’s speech announced that there would probably be a deficit of £30,009 at the end of the financial year, and that it was proposed to meet the deficit by the issue of Treasury bills to the amount of £50,000. The Speech referred hopefully to the prospects of the colony’s resources, which were expanding, whilst business was being conducted on a sound basis. Brisbane, October 11.
