The Melbourne Leader suggests that Silver Prince should be secured as St Alban’s successor in Tasmania.

Ringmaster, by First King—Yardley, who won the Caulfield Guineas three or four years ago, i» reported to be in England, a Victorian sport having declared that he saw the horse at Home. Ringmaster left Melbourne some time ago and wa3 supposed to be bound for Western Australia.

The Lower Valley Jockey Club have decided to hold a race meeting on Boxing Day. Following is a list of the new officers :—President, W. C. Buchanan, M.H.R.; Vice-Presi-dent, J. Martin, jun ; Secretary, J. McLeod ; Treasurer, Geo. Pain ; Starter, J. MoMaster ; Timekeeper, W. Armstrong ; Handicapper, J. O. Evett, if he will accept; Judge, Wallace • Smith ; Clerk of th 9 Scales, T. F. Evans; Clerk of the Course, John Cameron ; Stewards, Messrs McDougall, C. Harris, Dowman, Green, Orr, S. Mahupuku and Everitt. The balance sheet showed £l4 6s 4d in hand.

The totalisator has become very popular in India.

During the totalisator debate in the South Australian Legislature one member came down on the bookmakers thus :—' On May 1, 1885, there were 309 bookmakers licensed by the Victoria Racing Club, and these paid £5238 per annum. In addition to this, lioonse had to be paid at Sandhurst, Caulfield, Ballarat, and! other places, and the sum of about £16,000 was thus paid for bookmakers’ licenses. Where did this money come from ? It came out of the pockets of the people who visited the racecourses. These 309 bookmakers lived on the fat of the lan l , drank champagne, and were sumptuously lodged. It was estimated that these men spent £IOOO each a year. This amounted to £390,000 per annum, and it all came out of the pockets of the people. If in this colony (South Australia) the sum of £50,000 a year passed through the totalisator, 7£ per cent, would go to the support of rauing, and this was a small sum as compared with what was paid by the people of Victoria.’

It was rumored in Christohurch last week that Artillery was to be sent to the stud. On Wednesday morning, however, he appeared on the track again, though evidently pretty well broken down.

Somneil had a bit of bad luok after the Geraldine meeting. He got very badly shaken up in the train returning borne, and was found to be lame in the off fore leg. He was at once attended to, and it is hoped that his injuries will only be temporary. This, however, is rather an awkwerk time for such an accident to happen to a Derby candidate, for it must throw him off his work for a time.

Silvermark is reported to have done a big gallop at Riocarton on Wednesday morning of last week. He completely ran away from the Derby candidate Gipsy Prince, over a mile and pulled up fresb. With only 7st 91b on his back in the Hew Zealand Cup Silvermark will be worth watching. Nelson is still in work at Elierslie, though his off leg is rather queer. An Auckland scribe thinks the old horse might have been allowed to retire on his laurels without waiting for a breakdown. The first of Commotion’s gets is a foal from a ware named Alert.

Realisation, Maxim’s dam, has produced a filly to Nordeufelt; and Tres Deuce, Manton’s dam, a filly to the same sire. Atlantis, dam of the high-priced American colt King Ban, has produced a filly to Leolinus. Dunlop has gone to the stud. At a meeting of stewards of the Welling, ton Racing Club on Monday night, a letter was- received’ from the stewards of the Island Bay Racing Club stating that as the change in the tenancy of the Island Bay course prevented them continwing operations,

they were anxious to recompense their secretary, Mr G. Donue, for his consequent loss of office, and they had hit upon the expedient of tendering to him a complimentary race meeting if the Stewards of the Wellington Raoing Club would kindly place one of the racing tracks at their disposal for the purpose. Accompanying tlie letter was a draft programme in which it was proposed to hold the meeting on the Tuesday following the W.R.C.’s Spring fixture and give away about £l7O in stakes. The meeting looked with favour on the proposal, but as the attendance was not large the matter stood over till Wednesday night.

The Programme of the Masterton-Opaki J. C. Summer meeting was approved. A Mr Bonnet, of Queensland, has bought Kingfish, by Piscatorious- Yatterina, for stud purposes. He has also purchased the Musket—Rosina mare. Rosebud. Australian statistics for last season show that Abercorn was the biggest winner, with £4179 to his credit, while Volley, comes second with £3672—not at all a bad result for a two-year-old. The following interesting comparison of Now Zealand and Australian winnings is made by Mazeppa :

Australia. New Zealand. Abercorn £4179 Maxim £1637 Volley 3672 Sextant 1510 Dunlop 3372 Gipsy King 1357 Australian Peer 3279 Carbine 1320 Carlyon 3067 Dudu 1040 Of New Zealand-bred horses in Australia Pasha won £6BB ; Mitrailleuse, £537 ; Enfillade, £495 ; Niagara, £415 ; Teddy Yuile, £240 : and Whakawai, £205. The dispute between Mr J, Marshall and the Few Zealand Stud Company with reference to the scratching of the two-year-old Necklet for certain events to be run at the A.J.C. meeting, has been satisfactorily adjusted, according to an Auckland paper, by the paymeut of £SO. A meetiog of stewards of the Wellington Racing Club wnß held on .Wednesday afternoon, Mr H. D. Bell (Vice-President) in the chair. The object of the meeting was to consider a request from the stewards of the island Bay Racing Club for the use of the Bay course for a complimentary meeting to Mr J. Donne, the secretary of the Club. This matter had been considered at a previous meeting, and adjourned in order that it might be' submitted to a full meeting. All the stewards were present and represented, and it was unanimously decided to grant the request. The programme for the meeting was submitted and approved. The amount to be given away in stakes is £165, the events being as follow: —?
