The Elections .

The Wellington municipal elections resulted, on the whole, in a highly satisfactory manner. Most of the best men in the old Council —excepting those who unfortunately refused to stand again—were re-elected, and the most troublesome and obstruc tivo of the old Councillors were excluded, while there is most invaluable infusion of new blood. Councillors Chapman, Seed, Wllleston, Harris, Muir, and Moeller are all well known and very shrewd and capable men of business, and Messrs Brown and Fraser have won credit already in other public capaciiies. The new Council is emphatically a strong and able one, fully equal to its important duties and responsibilities. We hope and believe, too, that it will prove to be a working and not a talking Council. The less there is of mere speechifying in such a body the better will the necessary work be done and the better will the city’s interests be furthered. WLat is now needed is not mere frotny oratory —still less such vulgar personalities as too often disgraced the old Council — but careful, intelligent, and far-seeing administration of civic affairs, and this we confidently , look for at the hands of the new Council. The ratepayers have certainly risen to the occasion. Evidently they made up their minds to have good men , this time, and they have carried out that determination. It is noteworthy that two-thirds of the new Councillors are new men, that in Lambton and Cook Waras all the Councillors are new, and that only four of the ex-Councillors have secured re-election. This is an exceptionally sweeping change of personnel. We see every reason to hope that the change will prove distinctly beneficial to the interests of the city.
