AN ILLEGAL MARRIAGE.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) MastkrtoN, September 28. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, Joseph Applin was charged with having made a false declaration under the Marriage Act. Mr Beard appeared for the defendant, and Inspector Thompson for the-prosecution. It appeared that the defendant, who lives at Carterton, went to the Registrar last March and tried to obtain a license to marry Mary Martha Applin, the widow of his deceased brother. The Registrar applied to Government to know if the step was legal, and

being informed that it was not, refused to grant the liconßo, A similar applioation was made at Greytown, and this was refused. The defendant went to Masterton and applied for a license to Mr J. H. Ivibblewhite, the deputy-registrar. The defendant was asked if he and his intended wife were related. Upon u negative answer being givon, the license was granted, and the couple were married at Masterton. The defendant was committed for trial, bail being allowed.
