The apron, tie, and collar carnival came ; off at the Columbia Rink Monday night, and was without doubt a decided success, hundreds not being able to find seats. The display of aprons was very grand, and the one worn by Mrs Robinson, an elegant combination of rare shells cemented on to a costly background, took the first prize. ' The most original apron was one worn by Miss Lachlan. It was a straw apron and afternoon tea set to match, attaohed and supported by a straw cord. The largest collar worn by a lady was an Elizabethan ruffle of extraordinary proportions, worn by Miss Whale, who took the first prize. The next in favour with the judges was a woman’s collar, worn by Miss Tabor. The gentlemen were next to be judged, and Mr J. Young succeeded in attracting the attention of the judges by his original tie, made from what was supposed, to be a horse rug. However, it was large enough, but not so long as the darning tie worn by Mr Myers, which took the prize v for the largest tie. It was about Bft long by 2ft broad. The next item was the largest collar worn by a gentleman. Mr Pearson was unanimously awarded first prize. The grand march, led by Mr Wootton and Miss Dixon followed, and was louded applauded by the audience. The music supplied by the band, under the leadership of Mr Minifie, was much appreciated. The judges were Messrs R. J. Reeves and Ward, M.H.R.’s, and his Worship the Mayor acted as referee. The decisions were received with applause. Mr Ward made a capital speech, complimenting the winners upon their success. Mr Reeves will present the prizes to the winners this evening. The only unpleasantness during the evening was the conduct of several ladies, who persisted in appearing on the flour without an apron. The rink was crowded in every part. The price fixed for the electric light at Reefton is L 3 per year per lamp, which is at the rate of 2d per light per night. This is atthe same rate as is charged ia SydnAy and else, where.
