Double shifts are now being worked in the Westport Coal Company’s mine, with a consequent increase in the output. "Westport, August 3.

Mr Job Lines made a start from town for Lyell this afternoon with two waggons partly loaded. He anticipates a great difficulty in getting through, and intends taking the load in instalments over the worst places on the road.

The harbor works are progressing very satisfactorily, and the increase in the depth of water on the bar keeps pace with the advance of the works, as will be seeu by the following figures :—The main depth of water during the month of June, ISS7, was lift 4in, while during the corresponding period for 18SS, the main depth was 17ft 7iin, rhowieg a clear gain in the depth of 6ft 3-Jin as the result of twelve months’ work. There were placed in the breakwaters in July, 22,500 tons, as against 19,500 tons for June, about three-fourths of which was placed on the western wall, which extended it abont 90ft, while nearly all the remaining portion was placed in the eastern wall, which extended it about 300 ft. The Western wall has been completed for a distance of 3200 ft, and there remains yet 1200 ft to be done to complete it in accordance with the plans of Sir John Coode. The eastern wall is now out 410 ft, and there remains 6590 ft yet to be done. The salaries to be paid by the Harbour Board on Saturday, the 4th instant, amount, for the mouth of July, to £3015. A lamentable occurrence happened aboard the steamer Kennedy on the voyage from Grey mouth last night. A passenger named James Davis disappeared overboard when the boat was nearing Westport. Whether it was a case of suicide or accident cannot be determined, but owing to the weak state of Davis, both mentally and physically, probably it was the latter. “Colonel’’ Taylor, of the "Salvation Army, is about to visit Westport. He goes first to Hokitika to open a new barracks there.
