There are about 1,000,000 people in Victoria, and about 3300 hotels. This gives the very fair proportion of an hotel to every 300 persons. It should not be forgotten, however, that “hotel” in the colonies signifies any place where lodging and refreshment accommodation is provided, so the figures are not quite so portentous with respect to drinking aa they appear. 'The schooner yacht Caoco, belonging to Dr .Merritt, of Oakland, cleared from San Francisco on Saturday, Jane S 3, for Marquesas, and sailed on the 2oth. was commanded by Captain Otis, and carries as passengers Robert L. Stevenson and a large party of ladies and gentlemen, who will take an extended cruise among the South Sea Islands, where Mr Stevenson will collect materials for a new work. Albert Frazer escaped from the Michigan Penitentiary and then induced his wife, who was having a bard time, to deliver him up and secure the reward offered for his capture. She did so, and Frazer had the satisfaction of knowing that ho had done something to provide for hia family.
