MELROSE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Melrose Borough Council was held in the Council’s office on Tuesday. Present—The Mayor, Couneillors Bayliss, Collins, Bourke, Higinbotliam, Fear, Brunskill, Turner, Agate, and Howden. A letter was received from Mr H. D. Crawford drawing attention to the fact that shell gravel had been removed from Evans Bay. The writer suggested that tlio Council should take proceedings in the matter, and suggested that if a reward was paid for the information, that the amount should be banded over to the Hospital. On the motion of Councillor Turner, seeonded by Councillor Agate, the Clerk was instructed to make inquiries into the matter, and take steps, if necessary. The Public Works Committee’s report was read and adopted. It was as follows :—The Committee beg to report that tho question of the proposed right-of-way through 48 B, North Kilbirnie, has been placed in the hands of the Private Streets Committee, who have to report to the present meeting. That a survey has been made of the esplanade from Island Bay to Ohiro Bay, as ordered by the Council. The Committee beg to recommend that a letter be sent to Mr Falkner thanking him for the information contained in his report to the Council. That accounts amounting to L 29 15s 8d be passed for payment. The Streets Committee recommended that the Council accept the amended plan submitted by Mr Zohrab in reference to subdivision 48 B, Kilbirnie, on condition that a right-of-way be formed 20ft wide, and metalled 15ft wide to a depth of Gin with good second-class metal, also to make a gravel footpath 6ft wide. The report was adopted. It was resolved that the sum of LI, in addition to the amount voted at last meeting, should be expended on the works in hand in Kilbirnie.
Pursuant to notice, Councillor Howden moved that the meetings af the Council be held monthly instead of fortnightly, as at present. Councillor Bayliss seconded the motion. Councillor Fear moved, as an amendment, that the motion be brought forward in three months’ time. Councillor Turner seconded this. On being put the amendment was lost, the original motion being carried. It was decided on the motion of Councillor Turner, seconded by Councillor Brunskill, that certain filling work to be carried out in Reef-street should be done to the satisfaction of the Committee appointed in connection with the work. Councillor Agate moved that' Messrs Olliver, Brown and Dean be appointed solicitors to the Council. Councillor Collins seconded this. Councillor Bayliss, seconded by Councillor Brunskill, moved as an amendment that the matter be referred to the Public Works Committee. This was carried. The Clerk was instructed to write to Mrs Edwards calling her attention to the fact that the dry gorse deposited on her land at Island Bay had not been removed as requested by the Council. The meeting then adjourned.
