AN ESCAPED CONVICT CAUGHT.

(PER press association.) Christchurch, May 31. Jonathan Roberts, the Timaru escaped convict, was captured to-day near Killinchy, in the Ellesmore district. From information received Detective O’Connor went to Leeston this morning and met Constables Simpson aud Warring, and proceeded to scour the district, each taking a different road. Simpson, who knew Roberts, saw him working on the road near Killinchy, where a farmer was employing him. On seeing the constable he made off across the country. Simpson fired three shots after him, and he came to a standstill. The constable covered him with his revolver, and called on some men working near to come up and handcuff him, which they did. O’Connor and WarriDg came up soon after. Roberts was brought to Leeston, Whence O’Connor took him by the evening train to Christchurch. He admits having had several narrow escapes from the police, and states that since his escape he worked at a threshing machine at Makikihi. The people of the Ellesmere district gave ever}* assistance to the police in searching for him.
