MORE CHINESE ARRIVALS.

XTXV/XHU . TO THE EDITOR OF THE HEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir, — I was very much astonished toread a cable message in your to-day’s issue of GO Chinese being en route to New Zealand by the Wakatipu from Sydney. The thought occurred to me as to what has become of the agreement entered into between the Government and the Onion Steamship Company, whereby the latter, on condition of being allowed to carry some 70 “ Chinkies” toGreymouth, undertook to bring no more natives of the Flowery Land to this Colony. It is to be hoped, Sir, that ’ the Atkinson Government have not been weak enough to grant the Company permission to bring the yellow agony, especially in view of the strong public feeling against their further introduction here, and pending a decision to be arrived at by the approaching Chinese Conference at Melbourne. Political. pressure from without is very strong at present, ahd we know, Sir, that with two influential members with the Hon. George McLean and Mr James Mills, both° largely interested in the TJ.S S. Company, the Government require to have a stiff back to offer a successful resistance. Let us hope, however, the Maj or will not budge an inch in the decision previously arrived at not to allow any more of the heathen Chinee amongst us. If the Government adhere to that determination they may depend upon the sympathy and support of the people at large, otherwise they will deserve to be denounced for M ways that are dark and tricks that are vain.” I, with many others, will await the disposal of the /Wakatipu’s Chinese passengers with considerable curiosity., —I am, &c,, June 4. Consistency.
