During the past week business in tho import market has been very quiet, and the trade both in the town and country have confined their purchases to absolute sorting lines for immediate requirements. It is not probable that any improvement will be noticed until the Customs duties have been finally settled, as buvers do not at present feel inclined to give the. advanced prices now asked, although goods are invoiced on the understanding that should reductions be made in. the present tariff the rebate « ill be allowed. Latest information from the United States reporst that the export of kerosene to this Colony was being kept within the consuming power of the Colony. The tea trade is very dull this weolc, buyers having cleared largo stocks fu anticipation of the rise in duty. Currants sell slowly at late rates. Dates are in good condition and in fair demand. Ale and stout by first bottlers is ‘ rather quiet. In spirits Scotch whiskey is tiie leading sale. STOCK SALES. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) CiiuiSTOUURCir, June 6. The Now Zealand Loin and Mercantile Agency Company report (per Mr E. G. Staveley) as follows At Addington yards to-day there were large entries of stock. About 10,000 sheep were yarded. Fat cattle were firm ; balloon I *, Lb to Lb 5s ; cows and heifers. LI to L 5 10s : being 15s to ISs 6d per ICOlb. Fat sheep maintained their values ; prime crossbred wethers, 13a to 16a; exceptional, 18s ; mixed ewes, 8s 6d to 11s 9-1 ; merino wethers, 6s to Ss 9d ; mutton, lid to 2£d per lb. There was a good demand for store sheep ; pic-s were rather onsier ; baconers, 363 to 48s ; porkers, 21s to 31a; dairy stock sold ‘ Dunedin, June 6.
