The Associated Banks in Melbourne have unanimously elected Mr Colin M. Longmuir, the general manager of the City of Melbourne Bank, Limited, to fill the position of President of the Bankers’ Institute of Australasia. Mr Longmuir’s short speech at the meeting of the Insiitute, held on the 4th inst., is in itself a sufficient indication of his groat fitness for a position which is an important one. Tho Ceylon pearl fishery is expected to be a total failure this year. _ Owing to the heavy monsoon rains which swelled the rivers running into tho sea near the chief fishing resort, the Cheval Paar hank at Silavaturai, strong currents swept the bank perfectly clear of the oysters which had clustered there thickly three months before. Probably it will be some years before the fishery will be as productive as of o}d. We have received from the New South Woles Government Printer a copy of Sir Henry Parkes’ speech on the Chinese question.
