The weather for the holiday meetings seems to have been variously pleasant in some ins-anees and unpleasant in. others. At Auckland, however, where the biggest events came off, the gods appear to have been kind. It is noticeable that the records made over the several distances were looking at the times usually achieved at Auckland. The racing on the other hand appears to have been good. The Derby was an easy thing for Sextant, who, running in Mr Stead’s colours for the first time, had no difficulty in disposing of Bangle, the only other starter. Mr Stead has now, perhaps, the best racing stud ever got together in this colony, for never was there a greater aggregation' of fashionable horseflesh than that which in. eludes Maxim, Lochiel, Sextant, Russley, and Gipsy King. The A.R.C. Handicap fell to that game little mare, Lady Norah, Antelope running second ; and in the Railway Plate the speedy Cinderella beat Nelson in the very slow time of lmin. 22Jsec. * Nekon carried a lot of money ’ says the Press Association ‘and the starter was hooted/ so that it is possible Nelson was left at the start.

The Heathcote races were principally remarkable on account of the reappearance of Leon, who run second in the Heathcote Handicap on the first day, and won the J.C. Handicap on the second day. At the Opaki (Masterton) meeting, Smooth, who has been going to win a big race for a long time; came off, and appropriated the Opaki Stakes and Masterton Handicap, Mr Peters has been very persevering and not tboTncky with his horses, and,his success in this instance wall be very popular. Mr Leopold has had rather hard luck with Cupid and Rumour, the former running two seconds and winning the Consolation, while Rumour Iran two seconds and won the Tradesmen’s Handicap. At the Manawatu meeting the Palmerston Guineas was won by the ex hack racer, Germaine, and Tongariro, who is paying his place very handsomely, appropriated the Jnbilee Handicap, and Mr A. J. Hoskins won the Maiden Plate with Voltigeur. A remarkable case of a mare winning a race when eight months in foal is recorded by a Colombo correspondent of the Field, who writes:—The following is probably a unique case. A bay mare, Berlins, granddaughter of Stockwell, aged 3 years, was brought np here from Australia in March last. She won two races on the hills in April, and was trained for the chief events at our annual meeting in August. She was galloped, sweated, and physicked more than any horse in training, and yet * the fat ’ did not come off. On August 15, carrying lOat. 91b,, she won the Government Cup, one miie, in a common ca.nter, beating a good field. On the 17th, she started for the Tnrf Club Plate, two mileu s got. off with a bad start, and went round all the way, finishing nowhe\e, in evident distress. The following morning she was found to be ‘in pains,’ and died undelivered on the Friday, three days after. The muscles inside the pelvis were so developed that it was impossible to get the hand on to the foal. A fine colt foal of 8 months was found in perfect position. There is no veterinary surgeon in Colombo, and the mare’s state was suspected by no one but a doctor, who was also an owner. I fancy this is the first time it has ever been recorded that a mare carrying an eight months’ foal won a good race in good time. . At the Croydon October meeting Plunger Benyon won a good deal of. money over two of his horses winning hurdle races. There was a very good attendance of the public at Messrs T. Kepnedy Macdonald and Co/s auction rooms last Friday morning, when the privileges, in connection with the Caledonian Society’s sports, which take place on the Basin Reserve on the 2nd January, were submitted to auction. The results of the sale were as follow Grand stand bar and luncheon-room, £l9; two publicans’ booths outside, £lB ; two refreshment rooms, £lO. Mr J. Cross was the purchaser in each case. Mr G. Bedford secured the right of games for £1 10s. The right to sell cards was passed in.

AUCKLAND RACES. (united press ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, December 26. The Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Meeting opened to-day. The weather was fine, but the attendance was not up to the average. Admiral Fairfax and the officers of the squadron now in harbor were present. The racing, except in the Hurdle race and A.R.C. Handicap, was very poor. During the day Mr Stead, who, by the way', acted as official timekeeper for the. races, ordered the pen to be put through Maxim’s name for the Derby, and this caused some disappointment. The horse -went amiss on Saturday morning, when he was beaten in a gallop with Sextant, and it is said he is suffering from fever iii the feet. The following are the details of the day’s racing : Maiden Plate, 80 sovs. One and a half miles. —Hon E. Mitchelson’s Fusee, 7st. 91b, 1 ; Mr D. McKinnon’s Sir Walter, Bst, 2 ; Mr E, Fraser’s Pikau, 7st 91b," 3. No other starters. Won easily by a length and a half. Time, 2min 50sec. Sextant was a hot favorite. The pair were despatched to an even start, and for a short distance they ran on lerms,, but at the turn in Bangle went to the front and led past the stand by two lengths/pulling double. She maintained this advantage till nearing the cutting, where the race began in earnest, for hero Sextant ran up to the leader/ and he had three lengths’ lead of Bangle at the half-mile post, where the pace was very sound. Here Sutherland made a gieat effort with Bangle, and at the turn the shout went up that the filly would win, for she w r as at this point on even terms with her opponent, but Sextant, a length or two further on, drew away, and finally placed the issue beyond doubt; for, gaining ground at every stride, he ran home in gallant style, winning very easily by three lengths. Time, 2min 46|sec. Dividends— Inside, LI 4s ; outside, LI 3s. As is customary Sextant was decorated with, the blue riband on returning to the scale, and paraded the laws amidst enthusiastic cheering.
