COUNTRY NEWS.
„ WOODYILLE. (FROM OCR OWS CORRESPONDENT.) September 3. The Woodville Rifles are to have a busy month of it, as the district orders provide that there are to be three inspections during the month, and beside that, the Drill Instructor is to cpme up from Napier to give them a week’s drill. I fancy that will be found to he a mistake, for Ser-geant-Major Nelson, who was the most popular man wearing uniform in Hawkes Bay, could not get a decent muster at that sort of thing, and I doubt that SergeantMajor Carey will be able to, for the men did not “ cotton ” to him when they were in Napier.. The corps has had notice from the. gentleman who has so kindly given it the use of a range on his ground that it will have to clear, as he finds that it is dangerous for his cattle. Mr Hall has had a busy time of it this week at the Court, being the only justice to be got handy. Only one case though deserves mention, that of an old man who had been cooking in the Gorge, but who was really past work, and who was apprehended for begging. He was sent to Napier gaol for a week as the only way to get. him to the Old Men’s Refuge in Napier. It seems a pity, but it cannot be helped. . The borough elections are to be on the 19th, and not the 26th, as I wrote last week.
