DEFENCE OF THE COLONIES
By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.
(SPECIAL TO UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) London, March 28.
The Admiralty have under consideration a scheme suggested by Admiral Tryon for the defence of the colonies. They recognise the great importance of providing an effective defence consistent with a moderate expenditure, but think a modification of Admiral Tryon’s scheme desirable, and they accordingly intend to propose that instead of a number of vessels of the type of the Archer, a torpedo crusier of 3500 tons, which is being built at Devonport, the fleet should consist of fewer ships than recommended, but swifter, of larger tonnage, and carrying a heavier armament. It is believed that such a fleet would not only be more useful, but could be provided at the same expense as that proposed by Admiral Tryon.
(REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.) London, March 29. In the House of Lords last night, Lord Onslow, Under-Secretary of 3tate for the Colonies, replying to a question, stated that he hoped the new rules regarding the employment of pensioned officers of the British Army would give the colonial defence forces the advantages of tried officers. Her Majesty’s Government were anxious to assist the colonies in organising their own defences.
