A CORRECTION.
TO THE EDirOB OP THE NEW ZEALAND MAIL. Sir,—The correspondent of an evening paper evidently finds it a much safer thing to telegraph belittling information from Dunedin about your correspondent, “S.H.J.” than to answer that gentleman’s able letters upon the subject of Freetrade v. Protection. No doubt it is very pleasant to pose as an authority upon political economy, English literature, and things in general, as your evening centemporary delights to do, but it is a trifle inconvenient when the mere artist in phrases finds himself confronted by a man who has a large and firm grasp of his subject. As “S. H. J." is absent from this city, will you allow me to state that he was never plucked for his degree, as the writer in the Dunedin Star affirms ; furthermore, that he had conferred upon him one of the highest distinctions which the Melbourne University could give him viz., that of Scholar of the University ; and that *his scholarship was given because of his knowledge of Political Economy and allied subjects. A reference to the University Calendar will prove the truth of my assertion. The writer in the Dunedin Star is to a large extent a mere bungling inventor, instead of being “ One who knows."—l am etc., X.Y.Z.
