THE WELLINGTON ROWING CLUB. The general meeting of the Wellington Rowing Club, convened for Monday night, took place at the Royal Oak Hotel, Manners, street, at 8 o’clock. Dr Hutchinson, President of the Club, was in the chair. The business of the meeting was the election of officers and general. Before proceeding with the business Mr Kilner, hon. secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were confirmed. The Chairman then called upon the Secretary to state the business, which he said was the election of a permanent Secretary, vice Mr Ludwig, resigned, also a member of the Match Committee. Mr Hibbert then proposed, and Mr Cummings seconded, that Mr Kilner be elected Secretary. Mr Kilner said he thought that there were older members better fitted for the position. On the motion being put to the meeting, Mr Kilner was elected unanimously on the voices. Mr Cummings proposed, and Mr Hearn seconded, that a cordial vote of thanks be accorded to Mr Ludwig, the late secretary, for his past services, the same to be conveyed to him in a letter to that effect. Carried by acclamation. Mr Cummings proposed, and Mr Ballinger seconded, that Mr W. Scutt be elected to fill the vacancy on the Committee, caused by Mr Kilner’s resignation. For the same position Mr Taylor was proposed by Mr Armstrong, and seconded by Mr A. Rickman, The motion on being put to the ballot resulted in a majority for Mr Scutt. A letter was read from Mr Cummings, stating that he would be unable to build a four-oared boat which he was under contract to construct for the Club, and for the same reason he would be obliged to resign hispositiou on the Match Committee. It being decided to fill the vacancy on the Match Committee caused by Mr Cummings’ resignation at once, two candidates were proposed, Mr Hibbert by Mr Roberts, seconded by Mr Campbell, aud Mr Taylor, proposed by Mr A. Rickman, seconded by Mr Armstrong. Mr Taylor was elected. The Secretary read a letter from Mr Edmonds in which he stated that he would withdraw the cups which he had presented to the Club if they were not rowed for at once (the conditions under which he had given the cups having been that they would be rowed for within a certain period, which had long passed.) After some discussion it was decided that the matter bo referred to the Committee for their action. Letters were read from the Wanganui Rowing Club, the Picton Rowing Club, and the Union Boating Club (Wanganui) re the definition arrived at by them with regard to the amateur oarsman question. The next business was the election of an acting-captain (it being stated that the captain of the Club, Mr Stewart, would be some time absent from Wellington, he having gone to Sydney), and also the election of a deputy vice-captain, who, the meeting was informed by Mr Scutt, gone as engineer of the St.

Kilda. Mr J. E. Hayes was elected acting-captain, on the motion of Mr Ballinger, seconded by Mr J. W. Rickman ; and Mr J. W. Rickman was elected aoting vice-oaptain, proposed by Mr Taylor, and seconded by Mr Kilner. The question of the four-oared boat, which had been ordered from Mr Cummings, but which order he had been unable to execute, as mentioned in his letter, having been brought before the meeting by the Secretary, Mr Bryant proposed, and Mr Taylor seconded, that a four-oared boat be got elsewhere. Mr Taylor, in seconding the motion, said that he would undertake to supply the Club with a fouroared boat four or five days before the re* gatta. An amendment to this motion was proposed by Mr Campbell, seconded by Mr Scutt, that instead of a four-oared bout the Club get a pair of double sculls. Mr Campbell, in proposing the motion, said ho had often gone down to the shed and not been able to get a boat to go out in. He thought it necessary for the good of the Club that the double sculls should be got. An amendment on the two previous motions was proposed by Mr A. Rickman, seconded by Mr Ballinger, that no new boats be purchased until the liabilities of the Club are dis* charged. Mr Rickman thought that the Club would not be justified in incurring fresh expenses this season. Mr Ballinger said that as treasurer of tbe Club he had an opportunity of knowing how t&e finances of the Club stood, and he thought the present bills should be met before any fresh expenses were incurred. Mr Cummings in speaking to the amendment said that he thought there was no need of going in for new boats at present. When they wanted a boat he thought that there would be no difficulty in borrowing one, and beside, they would want a new shed next season, and they would have to find money for that. Several other members spoke to Mrßickman’s amendment, which was then put and carried without a dissentient voice. Re the Club fours which are boing rowed in heats, but which have been let drop lately, the Secretary wished to know when they would be finished, or would it be better to let them fall through altogether and start a fresh lot. The feeling of the meeting was in favor of having the heats gone on with at once as they stand at present. This was all the business, and the customary compliment to the chair terminated the meeting.
