NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS.
By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright, (reuter’s telegrams.) Sydney, February 1. Mr Barton, late Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, has been appointed to a seat in the Council. The Premier (Sir Henry Parkes) met with a most enthusiastic reception at Maitland yesterday. The nomination for St. Leonard’s took place to-day, Sir Henry Parkes being unopposed. Mr Trail, a Protectionist candidate, has been well received in East Sydney.
(Per s.s. Manapouri at the Bluff.) (united press association.) Sydney, January 26. Sir Henry Parkes has issued an address to the electors of St Leonard’s, and urges the electors to insist on a distinct answer to the main issue before the country. He points out that whereas four years ago he left a surplus of two millions, he has now to meet a deficiency of two and a half millions. The Government will introduce a Land Act to facilitate permanent agricultural settlement under conditions suited to the varying capabilities of the soil, and will confer on pastoral tenants such clearly defined rights of tenure as will afford security to investment of capital. He appeals to the electors to have no more of the suspicious class of* “ independent candidates,” who generally go for self-seeking. Let the electors set their face against doubtful characters of all sorts and conditions ; let there be no more “ sneaking in,” but let those who support a retrograde policy say so before the world. He concludes—“ Let those who are anxious for purity and economy in Government for lightening the people’s burdens, for the maintenance of a good name abroad, and for the restitution of New South Wales to a state of solid prosperity, and to its rightful place among the Australian Colonies, take sides with the men who in this trying crisis are determined to be united as one to use their powers to accomplish these great ends.
