BETTING TOTALISATOR ODDS.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, January 27. In Banco to-day, before Mr Justice Johnston, the appeal. of Charles Alfred Porter, bookmaker, against a decisiou of the Resident Magistrate in November last, by which he was fined £25 under section 18 of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1881, for betting totalisator prices on the New Zealand Cup day, was heard. Mr Stringer appeared for Porter and Mr Wynn-Williams and Mr Gresson for Detective O’Connor, the nominal prosecutor. It was contended that section 18 did not apply, as the investments were not regulated by chance, but were the result of knowledge and skill on the part of investors. The Judge took time to consider his decision.
