FEILDING.

(from our own correspondent). I regret to say we have had another addition to our already rather long record of fatal calamities. On the 13th instant, Mr G. C. Anyon, who had only lately

come out from England to join his friends here, was trying to stop a number of horses which were being driven from a sale when he was accidentally knocked down by one of them, receiving such injuries, or rather such, a shock to the system, that be died within a few hours. The week before last was a rather festive one for Feildiug, and the townfolk had several of what to many of them were exceptional treats. On Monday we had the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who perfectly enraptured an audience which filled our large Town Hall to its utmost capacity. Most people said they never heard anything like it before, and indeed it is only just to say that the performance of these colored warblers was unique and inimitable. Tuesday was a very gay and lively day, the occasion being a military review, for then were assembled here the whole of the forces of the Manawatu, Oroua, and Rangitikei Couuties for annual inspection by Major-General Sir G. Whitmore. The Rangitikei Cavalry, the Marton Royal Rifles, the Palmerston North Rifles, and the Manchester Rifles, together with the bands of the last-named and of the Rpyals, were here in full strength. The General and the officers of the several corps lunched with Captain Macarthur at. the Denbigh Hotel, and -the non-commissioned officers and men ■were liberally entertained by the Manchester in the Town Hall. The review took place on the racecourse, and was witnessed by a large number of spectators. A half-holiday had, by a requisition from the citizens, been proclaimed by the Mayor, and everybody seemed bent on “ going to see the soldiers.” It is not necessary to detail the various evolutions which, according ■to the General’s own account in his address to the troops at the close, were gone through in a very creditable manner, especially considering the very few opportunities they had had of working together. I should mention that Colonel • Stapp was in command of the field, assisted by Adjutant Hutchison and Ser-rgeant-Major Henry. On Wednesday there was a very fair attendance to hear Mr Glover, the temprance lecturer, who is an able speaker, and apparently made a good impression. Our old friend Sir William Fox also addressed the meeting in his usual happy .-style. The chair was occupied by the Mayor, Mr S. Goodbehere. A performance of the comic operetta “ Patience” by local amateurs was given very creditably to a good house on Friday night. Saturday, being Anniversary Day, was again a holiday. A great many people availed themselves of the cheap railway rates to visit Wellington, Foxton, Wanganui, went to various picnics, or took other outings. The festivities were brought to a close by another representation of “Patience” on Saturday -evening. A farriery match for DIO a-side recently took place between two of our local sons of 'Vulcan, Messrs J. Jansen and J. Taylor. For workmanship, style and finish each gained six points, but Jensen gained three points extra for speed, and was therefore the winner. The judges declared the work on each side (four horses) to be first-class, and the competitors to be both splendid tradesmen.

The weather has been for a long time, and still is, excessively dry and hot. There has been one ease of sunstroke, though not of a very serious nature. Many families have no water, except what they buy by the bucketful or fetch from the Oroua river, while some resort thither for doing their week’s washing.
