THREE PALMERSTON BANKRUPTS.

(united press association.) Palmerston North, January 27. His Honor Judge has been very severe on bankrupts who have come before him for examination at the Court here during the last day or two. At the close of the examination of William Fenton yesterday his Honor said he was deliberating whether he should give the debtor a week or a fortnight, but, to give him an opportunity to show that his position was not due to reckless trading, he would not declare the examination closed, and the bankrupt is to come up again at the next sitting of the Court. At the examination of William Whisker, butcher, to day, his Honor said the assignment by the debtor of his property was the most barefaced swindle lie had met, and he was about to sentence him to three months with hard labor when the Deputy Official Assignee asked for au adjournment of the examination, which was agreed to. A third case was that of a butcher named George Symons, who, it wa3 shown, had no capital to start with, was in business four months, and incurred liabilities to the extent of £150; and ‘in this case the debtor had been keeping his mother, brother, and sisters out of the proceeds of the book debts, and there were no assets for the creditors. The Judge sentenced the accused to 14 days’ imprisonment without hard labor, as a deterrent to other bankrupts.
