THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.
THE TOPHOUSE ROUTE OBJECTED TO. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Nelson, January 31. Mr Brodie Hoare and the members of the Board of Advice of the Midland Railway Company, together with the Engineers, received. a deputation, consisting of Mr Hnrsthouse, M.H.R. for Motueka, and three other gentlemen in the constituency, who urged the adviaableness of the Midland line being taken from Richmond through Waimea, West Moutere, Dovedale, Stanley Brook, and Taomoi to the Buller, at Hope Junction, instead of from Belgrove, via Tophouse, as surveyed by the Government. They said already an additional population of 3500 would be served by this line, and that it woald not have to be carried to so high an -elevation by 560 ft. They asked that the enmiehfc go over the line. Mr Hoare said tho object of the Company was to make the best line at the least cost. Mr Wilson would run trial lines through, and the Board would await his report. The best route for the Company would be chosen, subject to the consent of the Government. He said, however, that the survey would occupy •some months. , . . The railway party are being entertained -at a banquet to-night, at which over 150 are present. ___________
