SIR JULIUS VOGEL IN AUCKLAND.

(united press association.) Auckland, February 2. At the invitation of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Sir Julius Vogel addressed a large number of members this afternoon on the Question of the Exhibition which ih is proposed to hold in Auckland in 1890. Mr Lamb, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, presided. Sir Julius Vogel pointed out three reasons why the Exhibition should be undertaken. It happened that in 1890 there would be three events of very momentous importance to the Colony, The first he alluded to was that on the 21st of January, 1890, the Colony would pass the 50th anniversary of its proclamation. Probably before that time had arrived, or about that time, the Panama Canal would be a matter about which no doubt could be entertained. It would probably be open for traffic, partly, at least, iu years. Another matter which would have an essential influence upon the. future of the Colony was that about that time the railway between Wellington and Auckland would be completed, and he thought these three great events should have a worthy celebration. It would be necessary to have a guarantee fund of £25,000, and Government would probably guarantee £ for £. H.e then entered into details as to how the exhibition could be made remunerative. A vote of thanks was passed to Sir Julius for his address. The proposal is to be considered by the Chamber at a future date.
