THE ENGLISH TEaM IN AUSTRALIA.

Sydney, December 9. The cricket match, Shaw and Lilywhite’s team versus twenty-two of Hartley and district, was concluded to-day, and resulted in the Englishmen winning by 79 runs. Sydney, December 10. The return cricket match, Shaw and Lilywhite’s team versus Eleven of New South Wales, was commenced to-day. Though the weather was fine, the attendance at the match was only moderate. The wicket was heavy, owing to recent rains. The home team winning the toss, elected to bat, but only succeeded in compiling 117 runs when the last wicket fell. The visitors then went in, and when stumps were drawn had made 20 runs for the loss of two wickets.

The cricket match, Shaw and Lilywhite’s team versus eleven of New South Wales, was continued to-day. The visitors, who yesterday scored 20 runs for the loss of two wickets, resumed their innings, the last wicket falling for a total of 220, of which Read contributed 35, and Shrewsbury, bowled, 64. The home team then went in for their second innings, and when stumps were drawn for the day had made 14 without the loss of wicket.

Sydney, December 13. The cricket match Shaw and Lilywhite’s team versus eleven of New South Wales was resumed and concluded to-day. The Home team, who yesterday had seored 14 runs without the loss of a wieket, continued their innings, but failed to make a successful stand against the English bowling, the last wicket falling for 107 runs. The principal scorers were, Allen, caught, 30 ;Marr, caught, 23; and McDonnell, caught, 25. The Visitore, who only required five runs to win the match, accomplished this for the loss of one wicket, thus winning with nine wickets to spare. SENIOR CUP. The Ashley-Phcenix heat for the Senior Cup was concluded on Saturday afternoon. With one wicket down for 22 runs the Ashley continued their first inning, but could make no stand on what was decidedly a bowler’s wicket against tbe trundling of Messrs Malcolm and Wilson-Duret, the whole team only making as many runs a 3 were obtained, for one wicket the previous Saturday, viz., 22, the innings thus' closing for 44. Being no less than 199 behind the Phcenix total, a follow on was necessary, but the seeond innings resulted in an even more melancholy procession between the pavilion and the pitch than did the first, the last wicket falling for a total of 34, or 10 les3 than that of the first innings. The match thus ended in a win for the Phcenix by an innings and 165 runs. Following are the scores: Phcenix innings, 243. Gooder has best average in this innings of 1 "6, Webb coming out with 4'o, and Moriee with 4'6. JUNIOR CUP. The Star second and Welcome match was finished on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the Stars by 199 runs, the scores being—Stars, 110 and ISO ; Welcome, 44 and 47. The Stars resumed their second innings, Mansill 33, and Helliwell 10, the not outs, brought their scores up to 39 and 22 respectively. Campbell 22, and Smith 11 (not out), were the other double figure contributors in addition to those mentioned last week. Parsons bowled very well for the Welcome, securing seven wickets. The Welcomes only made 47 at their second attempt, Wylie being the only double figure scorer with 20. Tucker, three for 5, and Sanderson, four for 7, bowled well for the Stars, whose. fielding was very bad, catch after catch being either misjudged or dropped. The Ashley second were beaten by the Surrey first in the Juiiior Cup match by 114 runs. Resuming on Saturday, the Surreys, with one wicket down for 31, were all disposed for 64, Malcolm (22) and McLaughlan (12, not out) being top scorers. This left the Ashleys 139 to win, toward which they only got 24, of which O’Shea made 7 and Haggett 6. The bowling honors in the second innings fell to Edwards (6 for 12) and Beveridge (S for 10) for the Surreys ; O’Shea (8 for 28) doing most execution on the other side.

The matches, Phoenix v Wellington, at Island Bay, and Phcenix v Albert, at Newtown, arranged for Saturday last, but postponed on account of the rough weather, will be played next Saturday. The following members of the Midland

Club are requested to attend regularly at practice, in view of the matches to be played during Christmas and New Year holidays with the Nelson Club and Midland Club, of Christchurch :—Messrs McGirr, Lawson,. Blacklock (4), Kuchen, Holle, Tindal, Heenan, Cox, Rigg, Kilner, Wylie* Gillon, Peake, W. J. Salmon, J. A. Salmon* Dunning, Maxwell, Chrystal, and Smith. Wickets will be pitched morning and evening for practice. Eighteen have been selected by the Match Committee to practice for the Canterbury and Nelson matches to be played here during Christmas week. On Saturday, the ISth instant, an eleven will play the next fifteen, after which the eleven to represent Wellington in the above-named matches will be picked:—A. Blacklock, R. Blacklock, G. Barnes, Cox, C. Dryden, A. Gore, Heenan, Kirker, Lawson, Malcolm, Mansell, McGirr, Moorhouse, Motley, Nicholls, Roberts, W. J. Salmon, Tindal. Two “ big ” cricket matches will be played in this city within the next fortnight. The annual match between the Midland Clubs of Wellington and Christchurch has been fixed for the 24th and Christmas Day. On the Monday following (Boxing Day) the interprovincial match between Wellington' and Canterbury will commence, and will be continued on the two following days. In view of the approaching contests, it behoves both the Midland Clnb and the team chosen to represent the . city to practice hard to save defeat, as both the teams from the Cathedral | City will undoubtedly be strong ones. It | is to be hoped that the Wellingtonians will strain every nerve to secure both victories.
